    Hello all!

have a bit of a problem with my computer and i was advised to ask here and maybe someone might be able to help!
Heres the prob... I noticed the other day that the date and time on my computer had been reset back to the very first restore point. i thought it was a bit odd but didnt think much of it and just set the date back to its norm. but it seems everytime i log on it sets it back to the first restore point again. It gets a bit tricky from here.... it was only when i realised that both my CD and DVD drives registery files have been corrupted or damaged that the problem started to show. there is two ways according to the microsoft website to fix this problem [Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)] and that was to bring the computer back to a previous restore point or edit the registery files myself.
Im guessing that the restore point reseting problem and the cd drives problem are connected. but i dont know whats doing it. I've scanned the computer with my AV but nothing out of the ordinary popped up. since the computer keeps reseting to the first restore point (which now has damage cd and dvd registery files) there doesnt seem to be a point trying to fix the drives yet.
So is there anyone who can suggest any solutions to the computer reseting to the first restore point problem?
    Any help is much appreicated!

    oO
Have you actually seen the computer perform a System Restore each time?

How old is the computer (Desktop?) ?

    Restore your BIOS defaults...

Cheers for replying to my post!

im running windows xp home edition on a dell dimension 4600.

the date that it keeps pulling back to is the 23rd of July 2003 and that would probably be pretty close to when it was bought...

i haven't witnessed the computer do a system restore par say but i've had to do one once or twice in the past and there is no big give aways when the computer is doing one. Basically, in the past, i ran the computer in safe mode and clicked an option window with a list of restore dates i could bring the comuter back to. As soon as picked a date to restore to, the computer would just restart, taking slightly longer at the load up.

I think that if something wanted to bring the computer back to a restore date, it would go pretty much unnoticed other than the xp load up icon at the start taking a few seconds longer.

another reason for me to think its doing a system restore is that where i used to have a load of of system restore points dating up to this summer, are now gone...

Tbh I think the problem is with your CMOS battery, it's used to save all your BIOS settings when the PC is powered off, usually they'd last longer than 2 years but with Dells it's fairly common for them to go sooner. If you look on the motherboard you should be able to see it, it's like a big watch battery. You should be able to find replacements in most computer/electronics shops, or maybe even a chemists.
