Firefox problems

I'm having problems saving files in Firefox. Whenever I right-click and image and try to save it, I select the location and then Firefox freezes. Or if I select a link to a zip file or whatever, the options dialogue opens and when i select save to disk, I choose where to save it and Firefox dies.
Only way to close firefox when this happens is through task manager. I've unistalled and reinstalled a few times. Checked i have the latest version, even tried the new firefox 1.5 bets release but still have the exact same problem.
Mozilla works fine, but i like the themes etc you can get for firefox. I uninstalled all the plugins and themes too, just incase one of them was buggy, but nothing works.

    Any suggestions anyone?

Can't really help you as such. But the latest version of Firefox is 1.7. You could look here for anwser http://www.mozilla.org/support/firefox/.

How long have you been using Firefox? Were you using previous versions of Firefox before this? How long has the problem been present? Full OS version?

Firefox worked ok for about 6 months before the problem started. Problem has been happening for a few weeks now, boards is my last attempt to find a solution.
I think the first version of firefox i used was 1.0.4. Anytime a popup announcing an update was displayed i'd update. I uninstalled completely and installed 1.0.7 & 1.5 beta to eliminate any of the updates/patches causing the problem.
OS version is Windows XP Professional, Original release patched to SP1.

If it only happens when you try to download something then it could be a security issue. When a firewall blocks a program it essentially freezes it. I've seen programs crash altogether when my firewall blocks them.

Did your security arrangements change recently?

    start - run - firefox -p
create a new profile and try it.
as with IE empty the cache too.

check for malware etc - if possible safe mode with network support
have you considered XP SP2 ? - if not then I hope you have a decent firewall running

Do anyone ever have this problem: When i try to use print preview, for a large file as i did yesterday the whole thing freezes and all the open windows i have are closed. I like to print from Firefox as you shrink to fit as you can with IE which is a pain in the neck. Anyone know how to cure this hiccup?

it's possibly that firefox's download manager is too full of entries, run the clean up option

Hmmm, I can't be sure but the problem may have started when i signed up with BT BB. Could be the BT router is blocking firefox.
My current config is the Zyxel Prestige 623 router-modem that BT supply hooked up to a Linksys WRT54GS router. Any suggestions on how to check if its the hardware that is causing firefox to die?

This maybe the cause. Goto 'Tools - Downloads' and click 'Clean Up'. To stop it happening again, goto 'Tools - Options - Privacy - Download Manager History' and then from the drop down list, select 'When Firefox exits'

Download history was the problem. Tried deleting from the menu and options but even this caused FF to freeze. Eventually deleted the file (downloads.rdf) from my profile and now I'm able to save files again. Download history is set to automatically clear to avoid future problems.
    Thanks everyone for the help.
