So, what do folks here think about Michelle Wie getting all that money thrown at her for becoming pro? Or how about her playing on PGA tour events.
    Personally...
    1) I think fair dues to anyone who can command that much cash as she is obviously very talented
    2) I'm against her playing in mens events

    Daveirl,
So if Michelle could play in the mens events what would stop the men playing in Ladies events....that could happen! Easy way for the lads to pick up cash I'd say?
Would it go towards rankings, point etc - could be very messy.
Plus I think it turns into a bit of a circus when the ladies have played the mens events so far - media are all over it and the attention is taken away from the actual tournament....

Doesn't seem likely! They are 'Ladies' events. A lot of the mens events are 'Opens' like the US and of course British, if you qualify, you can play.

Fair play to her, if she can go through the same qualification/selection criteria as the guys who play every week!

I do have a problem with her getting an invite and putting some struggling pro out of the tournament, all because she is a woman, now THAT is something i think is wrong. I think Vijay said this and was hopped off by the feminists because he made this point when anneka was playing in a tournament, for once i actually agree with it.

I agree with Vijah and css, if she qualified, thats cool, but an invite is silly. There are alot of golfers who are struggling to make a decent wage after incurring the expenses of being a pro sports person.

Also, Sorenstam playing with the men did kinda make a mackery of womens golf. All the chauvinests were delighted when she missed the cut by a good few shots. Had she not played we would still all be thinking she could possibly compete.

I dont think she should be allowed to play on the mens circuit, it is not fair. Yes she has great talent, but the spot she is taking up, why couldnt we put in a 17yr old boy? Because it is much harder. It is easier for a god women golfer to progress to the top them men.

I think she is a good player and congrats to her, o yes I think that money is absolutly obsurd for someone who in professional terms factually is unproven. But that is nikes call.

But im firmly against any female competing in males tournaments. Because i feel that spot is taken up by perhaps another male gofler trying to break through. It is all a publicity stunt=/

But if she goes round shooting great scores and can compete i dont mind, aslong as she qualifies, not through exemptions.

as far as i know, now that she is a pro, she can only qualify for majors thru money earned on the mens tour, and she can only play on the mens tour thru exemptions. limited to 5/year i think. altho she might be able to qualify for the 2 opens thru open qualifyers, and of course wining an open would gain her huge exemption status on the 2 mens tours.

as far as is she worth the $10m ? definitley, no one gets under paid at this level of contracting, shes getting a small percentage of what nike/sony are potentialy going to make off her, shes a sales rep on her first contract.
last year vj made a few mil more than tiger on tour hitting 11 mil mark but vj made about 80 mil less in endorsements. vj was better at golf but is a worse sales rep. nike/sony are hoping wie will open up asian, female and teen markets that tiger doesnt impact. im wondering if theyll still let her hang out with ernie, or will tiger soon be seen as her best mate.

i dont buy the strugling pro losses a place thing either, she beats almost half the feild when she plays, the guys that loose their card arent strugling either making 650,000, their just not good enough, and they certainly aint sales reps. exemptions are granted by sponsers and they're always given out for publicity never for pity.

sorenstam on the mens tour? according to tiger her short game was too 1-dimensional, she was also too short. wie has distance and a crazy short game, its the short game the men pros talk about, theyve seen distance before. she can compete now with the men, and i beleive soon she could win. it'll be good for golf.

I never understand how that works, they pay her a fraction of what they will make of her. How will Sony sell more TVS caue their name is on her bag. People must be so weak if they will buy exspensive stuff because MichelleWie has her name on the bag.

True fact is that Nike is really the noob in golf, and reading an article, Tiger being the no.1 player o nthe team, is very unhappy with them. What most people dont know is that Tiger doesnt use what you buy in the shops, he gets a set made for him that are one of a kind. You dont buy his irons i nthe shops, he doesnt use the combos or anything, they arnt for sale =D

I dont like any nike club I have hit, they should stick with football =P And every other sport they try dominate. I think there new tight vests things are retarded =P and i fee like slappig anoyne that pays the like 50 euro they cost.

I think she made the right choice going pro, imho. There's always time later on for college. And she's making a *whole lot* of money now. That's always nice..

    :D

I thought it was horrible what happened to her being disqualified. She was aiming for a fourth place finish and then some b***tard goes and reports her for an offence she may have committed a day previous. I wonder if she was losing, would the same guy report her. It also transpired that the person who reported her wrote for a sports magazine. The sad thing is, he will have an article that everyone will read and make great publicity for some one else's misfortune.

    Totally agree with swingking here.
I think wie was a soft target for anyone with bad intentions.
She showed herself to be slighty naive when it comes to playing with the
pro's.She should have known that the whole world was watching her every move.Next time round she'll ask for a ruling.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,958 ✭✭✭✭RuggieBear

harsh but then those are the rules of golf. look at the ****e monty has being getting. I'd have rather been disqualified and learn from the experience.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 387 ✭✭css

Rules are rules, better she learned this lesson in a two bit competition than a major.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,140 ✭✭✭✭TheDoc

I hope she doesnt turn into someone who calls up rules for everything. I think everyone here knows how that ruling goes. And even me and my dad sitting at home watching, when that ball dropped it clearly hoped a good MORE THEN 3 INCHES foward. When she addressed the ball both me and my Dad went" wait a minute"

So if we can notice her at home, not hard for someone two feet away to notice either. Rules are rules. And that is such a basic rule I have no sympathy really. If it was some unheard of rule yeah but its a basic one. And on T.V it was clear the ball hoped foward, she was just anxious to get out of the trouble I'd say.

But shed best not turn into a Referee hog or she will get a bad name =/ Hate playing i nevents with peoplew ho are always calling referees, takes them like 10-15 minutes to get to the whole while we call people through =(

In fairness i got a tip years ago off an auld fella i played with, and his advice was always put down a tee when you are going to make a drop.. good advice, and you can never be accused of playing a ball closer to the hole and any of that crap if you follow it..

Although with what the pros have at stake why not call up an official if you are in doubt.. No harm in it.. and unless you're some kinda Daly lunatic always getting in trouble when you're playing bad, you won't be calling on the rules guys every shot!!

yeah, the journo was disgusting, trying to make a big story, aparently he paced out the distance afterwards, he definitely waited so as to get a scoop, not the kind of thing youd normaly associate with golf. how come no one phoned in about the rule thats what normaly happens it cant of been that obvious its not like no one was watching normaly someone phones and then the player is told within a few holes. i think the journo is going to have a lot of trouble getting interviews from any of the pros from now on.

When you hear of people ringing up from home with rules and DQ's they are normally journalists. Unfortunatly in every sport they try to get the big scoop. I heard a newspaper article saying it took him a day to report it cause he went back to his hotel or whatever and started writing the article describing Michelles nightmare start.
