I noticed across a few review boards, and here even (here) that alot of the comments and reviews on serenity drop nasty little remarks towards episode 3.

Some reviewers go as far as demand that George Lucas be strapped down and forced to watch sereinty over and over
the reviewer suggested that George Lucas should be nailed down to a chair and forced to watch Serenity several times to see how a proper space movie should be made (in light of the 3 most recent star wars movies), the review also praised Whedons storytelling.

Now this can obviously be just fan fever over serenity.

    Or

Is it like Episode 1 and 2, who were both also recieved well at first and it was only after the *wow* factor had died down that fans and movie viewers turned ugly.

So is general opinion on episode 3 dramaticly swinging around?

(my opinion remains unchanged, didnt like it when i saw it, still dont.)

I noticed that too - a lot of the original Ep III reviews were "it's not amazing, but it's pretty decent and the best of the new trilogy". Now "Serenity"'s reviews are most noticable for their Lucas bashing - I guess it's because "Serenity" is the closest equivalent and has a whole new freshness that doesn't rely on a big franchise or SFX.

Personally, I wasn't overwhelmed by Ep III when I saw it either but there does seem to be a slight bit of backpeddling. If it increases the profile of "Serenity" then I'm all the more for it, especially with the critics peddling him as a Lucas successor (it's interesting to note that most of the reviews seem to agree that, even if "Serenity" didn't overwhelm them, it was a very positive directorial debut for Whedon on film).

i'm also curious about the view of the other boardsie's. Now that episode 3 has been out and most (if not all) of the big hits have been through (still waiting on brothers grim myself) this year. Do most of you consider episode 3 a huge success?

I quite enjoyed Episode 3, on the whole it was quite a good film, but I'm not going to turn around now and recant just because I've seen the next big thing so to speak. I hate the mentality that requires belittling something else in order to validate your opinion.

I enjoyed Episode 3. I don't know why people are putting it down...personal preference, of course, but still... I thought it was a relatively good film. Then again, I really like Star Wars.. haha.

    :D

Never really liked Star Wars. I thought Ep. III was pretty good, definately better than Eps. I & II. I still think it's a good film but not so much so that I'd buy it on DVD.

I stand by Episode 3. It has some superb action scenes (the opening sequence kicks ass, as does the entire last 45 minutes or so), and the cull of the Jedis is one of the most emotional scenes in the whole six films.

I read that review in the ticket, that suggested that Lucas be strapped down, etc.. but they had hated EP3 right from the start... they called it "garbage" or something along those lines..
But in fairness, EP 3 had some great action sequences and generally looked very nice... but the awful, awful script was causing me to cringe every few seconds... .
Obi Wan's one liners... and Yoda with :
"not if anything to say about it, I have!"

    still... relatively enjoyable..

Action sequences, oh great. Ep 3 showed no originality whatsoever, just keep pumping in the money.

Episode 3 was great entertainment when it was released. It still is now.

Serenity's action isn't as good as Episode 3 but the story is a lot better.

If I had to choose, I'd be hard pressed. I can't say which one I prefer as they both excel at different things.

I have to say, when I went to see the epIII I was very worried about it. But I held out hope for it. Sadly in a movie, SFX aren't everything. Infact I found that the last 3 eps suffered from an over use of SFX. Something that I really didn't like about them.

Then there was the acting. I have to say that I found it a train reck that just got worse and worse.

That said. I do see a lot of people comparing both Serenity and Star Wars. To be honest I dont think thats fair on Serenity. It is compleatly different. Mal does not seem anything like Hansolo. Lefts face it. Han wouldn't rather stand and fight as much as Mal would. How often would you see Han string up dead bodies on his ship? To be hones I just dont think the two should be compared.

Jonathan Ross gave a review bout Serenity saying that it was much better that the last 3 Star Wars movies and that George Luas should pay attention.

I haven't seen Serenity so I cant comment.I did like Episode 3 though.Better than Episode 6 anyway. Stupid Ewoks...

HOW, HOW, HOW, is that different from the equally appalling dialogue in the "first" three films that all star wars fans claim are the best films ever made? I couldn't physically sit through more than 30 or 40 seconds of the first three films without wanting to scream they were that badly done. Most of the backlash against lucas that has come about has come about simply because the failures of the current trilogy can't be passed off by fans as "oh well, for the time that effect was state of the art" or "ah but at the time the dialogue was so cool and different..." The first three are, if anything, worse than the last three.

I saw the Brothers Grimm in LA last month and it sucked beyond all belief. Think the mummy 2 except worse!

    No.

For one thing, I honestly don't think the dialog in the first three was as bad as it was in the prequels. Also, those films were fairly low budget affairs with unknown or unestablished actors and not at all a guaranteed success.

In the new films Lucas advanced the eye-candy (both technologicaly and with celebrarty) probably more than its worth but kept the amaturish dialog; which at this stage seems more like incompatince.

Still enjoyed the film though :D The eye-candy was very impressive. Big explosions from start to finish. Great fun.

Haven't seen Serenity or Firefly yet, but I take it the sninde remarks are based on the fact that it's (as I gather) a less CGI-driven-wow! sci-fi and more of a good film first, set in space second type thing.

They were? Saw the first one, decided I'd give it one more go, saw the second and decided I'd hold on to my cash when the third one arrived. I think it was after seeing the second that my thitherto trusting girlfriend began to lose faith in my ability to pick a good movie. Still haven't seen the third, no specific plans. I reckon I'll see the third Matrix movie first and as far as I'm aware that doesn't actually exist (like the second that I imagined at some point). I have the first one on video because I liked the pod racing scenes. Of course I no longer have a working VCR so it probably doesn't count.

I'll go and see Serenity though.

Maybe the first one, but The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi were uber budget films. I think the original films are better than the three new ones, but then I love the three new ones as well... Episode 3 is my least favorite of the new trilogy. Maybe i'll have to see it again.
