South China Sea, House on Beach

Am thinking of planning a holiday in Vietnam, or perhaps Malaysia. I'd rather stay in a private beach house than a hotel. Just something pretty basic, but reasonably secure for two people. Any suggestions about where to look for this kind of thing? Or advice from anyone whose done it?

Spent a month in Vietnam in the summer but afraid i did the whole hostel/hotel thing rather than private house...

Mui Ne would probably be the best area of Vietnam to rent a house(more beach bungalow) however id say youd still have a hard time finding one,its not very vietnamese and you wont see the real vietnam-the people/culture...maybe try the thai islands?
