Having all your system files on a seperate drive is the best bet (or a seperate partition) because if, for any reason, you feel the need to install Linux, upgrade/downgrade/re-install because of Windows becoming unstable you can just format the drive/partition with Windows installed and install the new OS on the smaller drive/partition without losing the files on the seperate drive/partition that has all your personal stuff...

Your best bet is probably to just back up all your stuff on an external HDD or DVD-Rs, format your 200GB and then transfer all your backups back on.

You could also possibly use Partition Magic to change the size of the partition on the 200GB and make a seperate partition to transfer all the stuff you want to save and then format the partition you've left all the stuff you want deleted (Windows files etc)

This is of course presuming you have enough free space on your 200GB to create a new partition that'll hold all your stuff.

Do you mean the 60GB drive has bad sectors or it's just full of buggy software?

If it's just full of buggy software you can just format it (XP CD lets you do this and then install Windows onto it)

If it's got bad sectors then I'm not sure what you can do, someone else can probably help you

You will need to have the .exe's for your programs handy. As far as i know there is no way in transferring programs from one pc to another. You see, the programs will create files in the windows folder (.dlls n stuff) and in the registery of windows. If you "copy and paste" a game for example from one harddrive to another, the reg & .dll files won't be copied over as well because they are in the windows folders.

If you have a full backup of your system, uninstall stuff you don't need to free up space, then do a full defrag. You can use qtparted / ntfsrezize (on the knoppix cd) to shrink the partition without having to reinstall stuff.

On a clean install you could setup a 8GB partition for windows. Then install all programs to D: - this would mean you only have to rebuild the C: if/when windows goes belly up. Also means NtBackup / partimage (knoppix) would be able to backup your system files to one file less than 4GB so the backup file could fit on an FAT32 partition or a single DVD - making recovery easier (and faster since D: could be just restored by copying files)
