    I got a new Dell Inspiron 6000 today :D

My question is about battery life. I'll use it with the power outlet a fair bit, so am I better leaving the battery out when I do this (so I dont overcharge)??

I thought that might be the case, but on the manual it recommends leaving the battery in 'at all times' to preserve BIOS settings....

Basically what advice can you give me as regards to care of the battery??

    Thanks

I would leave it in , if the manual says it , and its just loading all the time, its not like u will 'overloade' it , it doesn't do any harm I think

AFAIK unless they have an inteligent charging circuit having constant power running into the battery would wear down the cell. Leaving the battery in to preserve the BIOS sounds a bit starnge to me as there is normally a small battery cell on the motherboard that looks after that same as a desktop pc and those batteries last years.

Further to this, the battery type is Lithium Ion, so I don't know if that makes any difference. I know that the batteries in Ipods respond well to regular charging, even when the battery is only half full.

However, most mobile phone batteries are the opposite, ie it is better to empty the battery first then fully recharge it. Overall, laptop batteries are poor enough (time wise), so any advice to prolong them would be great!

Yes it matters, Li-Ion , its not bad to load it all the time = its not necaissairy that the battery is full empty , u may reload it anytime.

how or where to i go about finding out whether its ok to take out my battery when fully charged. I just got a new laptop, never had one b4, and want to get the max i can from the battery! I was reading here somewhere that if i leave the battery in while connected to mains i will lose something like 65% of battery life in 1 yr!! my laptop is a Compal dl70

If you are gonna be using it on power for a prolonged amount of time (week+), just let the battery wind down to 50% charge & then remove and store it in a drawer or something.

ah i was getting very confused with people saying "for prolonged period of time", max time mine would be on is 4 or 5 hrs! so there'd be no prob then would there? And even when the battery is at 100% if it is charging it would say "100% charging" would it if it didnt have the switch off thingy? Ive now set the laptop to Max Battery too to try get the mst from it, any other tips, ive also reduced the brightness
