I know it's no big deal replacing the combo drive with a superdrive on a desktop mac (iMac, PowerMac etc.) but am not fully sure if it's plain sailing on an iBook. I've been wondering this myself actually as I've an iBook with a combodrive myself, talking to some friends who are MacGeeks they said it's possible indeed but don't recommend you do it homebrew style.

I work with Macs regularly, you have a PM!
Its not too difficult, but it can be messy if you are'nt used to it.

Sound thanks. I won't be doing this straight away so I'll keep it in mind but any idea how much the actual drive will cost me? thanks

Try here for the service manual for your machine.
    ftp://grijan.cjb.net:21000/macintosh/Manuals
The manuals detail how to repair your Mac.
Superdrives can be found on Ebay. Be sure to get the latest dual layer superdrive.
    Good luck.
