Hi,

I am trying to send mail though outlook from my old iol.ie e-mail address..

I can still get e-mail but sending fails, i think it's because i have the smtp address wrong in the settings.

The incoming mail server is pop3.iol.ie

any idea what the smtp would be?

    Thanks

You can use any old smtp server in some cases. For example i have three acounts but i route all outgoing mail through a particular smtp server.

Have you tried 'mail.iol.ie'? Could this be an authenticated smtp server?

    yeah tried that, didn't work

I just ninja-edited my post and changed smtp.iol.ie to mail.iol.ie.

If that doesn't work then it's something else.

    This is a General problem
Often SMTP usage is authorised by the initial INTERNET connnection logon of the ISP so if you use a DIFFERENT ISP you can't use the same SMTP. This is to stop spammers.

IN your email program their ought to be an option to use a "logon" account name and password (usually the same as used for POP, i.e. often the User name is mailbox adrress withoit the @eircom.net or @iol.ie

Further to stop impersonation, if you use the actual SMTP of your new ISP (who may not have a public one) , you can't use a reply address that doesn't exist or belonging to a different ISP, again to stop spammers using fake email addresses etc.

So try looking for the extra "log on to outgoing server" option and put the username and password in and use original ISP SMTP that is same domain as your email address.

You can of course set up a new email account with new ISP and send email, and pickup email from BOTH POP3 or IMAP servers.

This is advantage of a personal domain name such as watty@wattystuff.net

When you change ISP you get them to move alias from example fredhiddenbox@eircom.net to fredhiddenbox@iol.ie

You pickup enmail from one account called fredhidden@<where-ever> you send email with the <myname>@<mydomain> as replyto & from and the SMTP server accepts it cos it knows the alias.

The folksd getting mail and sending you mail notice no change as they never use or see the fredhidden@isp.com mailbox

It's NOTHING to do with ISPs. This is what should happen. Complain at ONCE if you can use another ISPs SMTP to them without loging in as the spammers can too.

man you can keep your IOL but the outgoing server needs to change!!

    to:- mail1.eircom.net

    try it !!

This isn't even a BB problem. Anyone connecting with a different ISP to the ISP/SMTP they normally use OUGHT to have this unless they are using username and password settings with Logon for "Outgoing Server"

Sometimes some server systems allow SMTP from same IP address with in a set timeout period after a successful logon for Mail Pickup (POP3). My own LAN server does this, but it is POP3 & SMTP combined so it is easy. I have other anti spammer relay facilites in force, as even on dialup my Mailserver is "visible" when I connect, as it, rather than my PC Email program fetches and sends all our Email. It AUTOMATICALLY deletes ANYTHING incomming with any executable in it exe, bat, cmd, pif, com etc etc.

If you are with eircom bb you cannot use the iol smtop you must use eircom's.

So you set up your email account with the iol settings for the incoming and the eircom one for the smtp its as simple as that.

You need to set up Outgoing server logon (email name & passwrord for IOL) or eircoms' SMTP with a new email address. You can still pickup from IOL address.

If you got Eircom Broadband, the info with it tells you how to use your Email and you ought to already have been given an email address.

On www.eircom.net (NOT eircom.ie) click "mail" on lefthand side column

    Should take you to http://home.eircom.net/email/

Then on left hand side lower down click on New Email

    should go to http://autoreg.eircom.net/newemail/

Click on Register new Email account rather than adding email, unless you do have an Eircom email address already.

    Goes to http://autoreg.eircom.net/
