When you say you reset it, do you mean that you loaded the recovery CD that came with the PC?

Also, what was wrong with the pc in the first place that needed you to reset it?

It might just be a dodgey driver - boot up in safe mode (press F8 when booting), go into Device Manager and see if there's an exclamation marks beside any of the devices...

So you have reset the BIOS setting to the factory defaults? These settings are what control how the computer sees your hardware such as your hard disk. Ordinarily the default setting shouldn't make much difference unless your friend has had to change the setting at some stage, or the original computer manufacteur made a change. The setting that is wrong could really be anything. You probably shouldn't have changed something that you don't really understand, or that was not for a good reason.

What make is the PC, and is it old or new?

This is a guess, but try changing the "UPnP OS" option to "No". I have seen this kind of behaviour before.

Press the F10 key again that will let you into the BIOS, there'll be aload of options, check through them to find the UPnP OS section. Also stands for 'Universal plug and play operating system'.

I'd say that a reinstall is a worse case scenario. The problem occurred cause of some change in the BIOS, ergo, vis-a-vis, concordatly, thats where the problem is.

At this stage it looks like the best thing to do, but thats prob just because i aint got a clue what to do. if i was to re-install xp what would i gotta do?

If anyone else can help me otu with this it would be great, cheers.
