Ok, you should not be removing the IDE cable when the computer's on.

You /may/ not be able to recover the files, but you probably will be. Can you give us some more information: Is it your windows drive? Does it get recognised by the bios?

Does the drive make any "k" noises or softer "G" noises

Klunk KlicK = not good - if it's a head crash then playing with the IDE / swapping the motherboard won't do anything, with many drives the disk will trash and can damage the controller trying to find an area the dead head could read.

ONLY If the BIOS doesn't recognise a drive and you have a sacrificial drive of the same type, then as a last resort, you can power up with the good drive and swap over the IDE cable.
