Celtic Poker Tour pulls out of Limerick Events

Just had a quick look on the Celtic Poker Tour website and it looks like they've decided its not worth trying to organise events in Limerick. (Was it something we said????) See 'Other News' in the following link:
    http://www.celticpokertour.com/editorials2.aspx?ed=5

I think they had more events organised for Limerick but they all seem to have vanished from the Venues and Dates page.
They seem to be favouring smaller towns which have probably never had a poker tournament. I wonder why??
I give them about 12 months before either word about their greed gets out
or someone else organises 'proper' tournaments in these areas.

Damn. That's a shame. Was really looking forward to it.

It's interesting to see in their editorials that they claim to have between 90 and 130 players at most events. Can anyone clarify this? I'd be very surprised if they had any less than 180 at any of their events. I assume they're making up the numbers to make their cut look smaller.

Well, what i heard from a guy who played in the Athlone Celtic poker tournament is that they have 30-40 guys who follow them around and play in every tournament they run. Now from what he said there were some dodgy play going on amoung these guys, ie working together and trying to bust out non-regular players to the tournaments!

I mean really its down to the players who attend these tournaments on the night to demand these guys pay out a right amount prize pool. They are ruining it for the rest who try and run a good value for money night!

Yes and No. A lot of these guys are new players who haven't played in casinos and don't know any better. For all they know all tournaments have 50%+ of the prizepool raped even when there is a nominal reg fee. Its not fair on those guys at all. The need to be informed.

Yes i totally agree the new and non-informed player dont know any better, and i guess we need to go back to the idea of an Irish Poker Association you guys were talking about. And have officially sanctioned tournaments.
But even that may not be enough to inform the these players of when they are being ripped off.

Ya, i know a few guys who were going along to the events.....I told them about the prize structure and what it meant but seen as they were new to the game they didn't mind. It is seen more as a night out than card playing for them.

The attitude was "Sure we're not going to win anyway.....
I think the problem is that until people play poker for a while and really get into the in's and out's of the game they will be happy just to treat it as a laugh and a good night out even if the organisers are getting away with daylight robbery...

Apparently there were only 55 people at the Dundalk one recently. They still paid out the 10k though.

Interesting... It seems that as they get closer to Dublin, their attendances drop, because players have more of an idea of the value to be had in these tournaments. Ironically, that one with 55 players looks to be very good value!

I'm hoping that you have a good contingent of the Dundalk players anyway, Mike.

I know and whats worse is that I think our regular Friday night game in GAA club will be canceled as most of the players will be supporting it. It didn't help that one of the regulars to the Friday night game was second in the last tournament then had in Killarney getting 2,000. Must venture over to Killarney to check out the new card room over there.

Can't wait for tonights regular game. Normally 15-20 people. Picked up 300 for first place last time I was there. Should have laptop sorted by the end of the month when I'll get acquainted with online STTs.

There's a €50 freezeout on Sunday night. Should be 30-40 runners. Starts around 9 (I think). I'll be there so if you do go introduce yourself. As ZZR1100 so quaintly put it I'll be the bald English guy! There will also be a tasty cash game afterwards I should think.

In that case I better send some people to the opticians :D

Maybe my info was wrong but over half a dzen people gave me that figure. If that's the case then it is another nice 5k taken out of the players pockets.

They held another in Ballina tonight, i am obviously not there but i wonder how it is going. there was alot of negative talk about them the past week around here so im hoping the tide has turned for them and their numbers are dwindling. But somehow i doubt it! :(

Thanks Lplate and ZZR1100 for the update on the Killarney card room. Sounds like a good set-up all right. Should get out there but might be a few weeks. Haven't got as much time on my hands with a 7 month nipper to take care of. Will look out for ye if I drop in.

Look forward to meeting you. I can't pimp the card room too much because the owner is a friend of mine...but it is very good. A big weekend is being planned for early December with a couple of celeb players and members of the poker press, who will be respected by everyone in this forum and beyond, are being invited to give the place a look.

I came second last night despite getting little in the way of good cards. I got lucky 3 or 4 times with positional raises (with the likes of 9Ts and K3s) that smacked the flop hard and found customers. Going back tonight for a €100 stt satellite for the IPC in January. They have 10 tickets for this and will be playing some stt's and a supersat mtt for them over the coming weeks.

I'm looking forward to heading down to visit this place. Sounds like a nice well run place and the owner is a gentleman. Hopefully we can get something similar up and running in Limerick soon.
