I am thinking of going traveling next June. I am going alone and am going to SE Asia for two months and then heading on to Oz to work for a while.

Does anyone have advise in terms of the best places for a solo traveller in Oz to stay in terms of getting work - I was thinking Melbourne or Perth. How easy/difficult it is to get work there (I'm a project manager for a IT company) and to get sponsored if I wanted to stay on. Does anyone know about those new two year visas and how much cash I should bring (I'm low mantainance)?

    Hey

I am in near the same position as you. Heading over to Sydney end of Oct for a while. Then hoping to come back via South America.
I am a Software Engineer and will prob keep an eye out for some contract work. I heard various stories, from it wont happen till it shouldnt be too hard. I know a good few people who all have friends that got sponsored. But also know it may take some time and a little luck.
I am going to see how it goes. Will work on anything if I have to for a while. But might not hang around as long as I would have if I dont get anything more related to the IT field.

Could I just ask, how many years have you been working in IT ?.

Also on funds. I was told by friends out there to bring enough for at least 2mnts, including rent, deposit if you plan to get accomadation.

Good luck. I am pretty scared about leaving the comfort of my good job here and going there on a crummy 3 mnth visa but will make the most of it.

Also, I looked into the skilled visa. I qualified easily but it would take 6mnts or more to process all the documents. Honestly, I just didnt want to wait that long. If I love the place, I may come back and work here whilst getting that together, head back out.

Sorry for big mail. And i think Lonley planets is a lot better place to get info from...

in the same position as yourself, in that i really want to got to oz, but if i did it would most likely be on my own, (can't think of anyone that hasn't got a job, debts to pay, married e.t.c.)
i was just wondering what is the deal wit s.e. Asia,
is there a visa needed for it, would you need to work to ease the bank balance?

from what i've looked up on it, it seems most jobs that people get in oz, is manual work like fruit picking e.t.c, or working in bars restaurants, although i'm not sur on how easy it is to get skilled jobs over there
