DAVID JOHNSON may have invested millions without success in pursuit of the Cheltenham Gold Cup, but jump racing’s most prestigious prize can be his’s – or anyone else’s– for as little as £10,000.

That’s the figure anybody interested in owning the 1955 Cheltenham Gold Cup will have to start the bidding at after the trophy was this week put up for auction on the ebay website.

Won by Gay Donald, the Cup is offered for auction in its original box with plinth by current owner Geoffrey Bond, who has decided to put it under the cyber hammer following the death of his father George who bought it back in 1991 after responding to an advert in The Sporting Life.

“As far as I am aware this is the only Cheltenham Gold Cup for sale anywhere in theworld,” Bond said. “This has to be worth a fortune to the right person. My late father purchased this trophy in 1991 for £5,000 and it was a bargain then - it is currently insured for £25,000.”

Auction houses Sotheby’s and Christies have both beenin contact with Bond expressing an interest in auctioning the unique piece of racing history and, should the Cup fail to attract a sufficient bid before the auction ends shortly after 10.30pm on Tuesday night, it is likely to feature in a sale of sporting memorabilia at Sotheby’s in late November with a reserve of £25,000.

Earlier this year, the 1958 Cheltenham Gold Cup was sold for £8,110 on ebay, with the successful bidder having been a previous owner of the 1958 winner Kerstin.
