I have a V500 (originally on Orange UK) and I've just done this a few days ago with an .mp3 I cut down to size for a ring tone. I don't know what differences there are with the Vodafone menu but this is what I did:

    - sent the .mp3 to my phone over bluetooth.
    - From the main menu selection, I selected Multimedia, Sounds
    - At the top of this menu, the first option is 'Apply as Ring Tone' (followed by New, Details, ...).

Do you have the same menu selection?
