Go back through a few pages and theres a good few threads on this not too long ago. Or wait till the weekend when the search function is working again!

I stayed in the penn hotel opposite madison square guardens. I'd reccomend it to anyone that didnt want anything too lavish.

Look on hotels.com thats where I booked with no problems.

A mate of mine would second the Penn Hotel. I stayed just around the corner in the Manhattan Inn hostel. Very very central location.

If you are staying for more than 1 week and would like an apartment like place to stay then you can rent an actual apartment instead of opting for the hotels. I was there last year for 10 days and rented an apartment in Midtown Manhattan. It worked out a little bit cheaper than a hotel and was really nice. Obviously the apartment was small but it was kitted out very well....fine furniture...amazing sleigh bed and massive tv....tiny tiny kitchen but I never actually went in there...when in NY ya eat out!
we booked it through this crowd: www.urbanstay.com

ive stayed in new york a couple of times first time i stayed in the ramada inn new yorker because there was six of us and we got a family foom for i think $180 a night was fine nothing special but very central was on 8th avenue&34th street (one block from macy's + one block from madison square garden) last time i went i stayed in the Hotel Edison which was real nice and was bout 10seconds walk from time square its in 45th and broadway as far as i remember not sure how much it was but ya can google it.

btw I use tripadvisor quite a lot and find its usually just people who have had really bad experiences and want to complain a lot who post I have to say that some of the hotels i stayed in were reviewed really badly and turned out to be just fine, so i wouldn't book/not book somewhere solely on a review on trip advisor.

anyway enjoy NYC just come back from there after three months and definetly(?) is the best city in the world...... :D

My mate stayed in The Pennsylvania Hotel too and said it was grand, real central and resonable.

Im headin over next week and have booked a studio apartment in Greenwich. Its supposed to be the nicest part of the city to just walk around and its cheaper than a hotel. Of course you don't have the breakfast in the morning or rooms cleaned, etc, but sure just get out and pick up and coffee and bagel and it's got a kitchette so you don't have to rely on eating out all the time. Check out www.ratestogo.com (but may have better last minute deals) or www.spnewyork.com for apartments (or suites as they call them!).

I'd recommend renting an apartment too - its a really authentic experience of New York! We used www.urbanliving.com and they were cool.

DH and myself stayed at the Pennsylvania Hotel and it is dreadful. I've seen plenty of bad reviews about this dump on a couple of other sites. I personally know other people who stayed there and none of them had a good word to say about this kip. Check out tripadvisor.com Ugh the horrible memories of that place

Big Apple Hostel, It’s located on 45th and 7th, www.bigapplehostel.com; not bad for $30 a night because it's a minutes walk off Times Square. Well that was back in 2003, so prices may have changed

I am staying in the stanford hotel in jan

    www.hotelstanford.com

I read about it on some board. Only 99 a night and and one of the most central hotels. It gets very good reviews on tripadvisor as well

I stayed in the Pickwick Arms Hotel on East 51st Street (midtown). It's a basic clean hotel and I got my room for $99 per night (shared bath). The rooms are small with TV and a single is a single! The shared bath (i.e the loo and showers are down the hall) is a bit of a disadvantage (especially in the middle of the night!). Some rooms have private bathroom and are more expensive. There is a metro station 5 min walk away and it is a nice area and there's a nice diner around the corner for breakfast.

I understand that they are renovating the rooms so you might get a new one!
