Word Count difficulties...

Hello to you all. Perhaps one of you would be kind enough to help me out here.

With essays coming up I need to know how many words to write for them. Obviously this requires a word count - which I don't have, at least I don't think I do.

    I'm using Windows XP here.

Does anyone know how to locate whther you have a word count and in the event I do not have one, can I download one from somewhere?

I'm not very technical here (as you've probably guessed) so your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers.

In Microsoft Word go to Tools and click word count and voila....

No, you go to Tools and click word count, not Tables!

I don't appear to have a 'Tools' icon.

I have 'File', 'Edit', 'View', 'Insert', 'Format' and 'Help'.

I probably should ask - 'Wordpad' is Microsoft Word right? Right?

What does that mean? Do I need to download Microsoft Word or something? I'm really lost now. :(

    Cremo,

Do you know of any free downloads? I think I would have to pay for that one.

Wordpad doesn't have a word count feature. Word does but obviously if you don't have it installed on your PC this isn't much use to you unless you go and purchase it.

I take it this is on your home PC?

    This might be of use.

Even has simple instructions to follow. Should do what you require

Try http://www.openoffice.org by Sun. It's legally free and looks very like Microsoft Word. It will read and write word documents.

    http://javascript.internet.com/forms/word-count.html

Just go there and copy and paste your piece into the box.

    Voila!

    EDIT:

You have to click 'Count Words', too, by the way ;)

Thanks for the help guys. I knew I could count on UCD Boardsies. ;)

This information will provide a good short-term solution until I buy something more worthwhile. Cheers.

college provides sophos for free under "other resources" in ucd connect. it's very good and gets updated automatically, and doesn't slow things down at all. unusually good work by computer services

sophos is crap. its alright at keeping viruses out. But its hopeless at removing any viruses a PC might already be infected with. And I've found viruses using another scanner that the sophos one never picked up on.

As well as that, the default settings that UCD uses means that the scanner will preform a full scan at 9pm each night. But if it detects an infected file it jsut leaves it sitting there!! Makes no attempt to disinfect it.

you have to go into the options and set it to disinfect or delete, etc.

Anyway in my experience Norton, Panda or AVG make better virus tools.

But as u say, Sophos is available free.

ClamAV is good also but doesn't do on-access scanning. Sophos will shred files if told to do so. I moved the 9pm scan back to 11pm (when i go have a shower and a cup of tea and buns) so it doesn't bother me - you should always run it if you can.

Mr. Nice Guy... how the FOOK did you get through first year history and politics without knowing how to do a word count, or know WTF MS Word is????

In history alone you've to write 8 essays... further proof that you dont exist...

    :D

Well I got into the habit of writing my essays on paper first when I was in the Library studying and I'd simply count the words by hand and then type it out.

    Doesn't everybody do that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,541 ✭✭✭irlrobins

Can't remember the last time I wrote anything by hand. In fact due to lack of use my handwriting is now appalling. Which means I type more. Its a vicious circle really.....
