.tar (an all similar files) making on Windows

    Is it possible to make such archives on Windows so that they can be extracted on a linux box?

    I use Cygwin, then it's just the same as in Unix...

    tar cvf file.tar file1 file2
    tar czvf file.tar.gz file1 file2

    Be aware most linux boxes can handle .zip files too (unzip command), but you do have to put up with the owners complaining as if you'd given them a .doc file.

    Sure. Add directories just by listing them with the files.

    tar cvf file.tar dir1 file1 dir2 file2
