i was haunted! - "i was very lucky!"
is this a cork saying, no one else in the country i know seems to use it.
does anyone actually know where this phrase came from?

I think in other parts of the country it means "I was unlucky".

    Stupid outsiders

definitely means "I was lucky" as in I was haunted.. someone was looking over me / protecting me... that's what I always mean when I say it!!

Its something I hear a good bit but now that you mention it, I don't think I’ve ever heard it outside of Cork.

Taking it somewhat literally, it could mean either, "I was haunted" could mean any sort of unusual occurrences were happening. Mind you, I think I've heard it used (in Cork) mostly in situations where despite all the person's attempts their goal was just out of reach. Like someone who misses 3 sitters in a row in soccer...

It has two meanings to me.

"I was haunted" - I was desperately unlucky, just missing out.

"I was haunted lucky" - Getting something by luck that you really shouldn't have, ie the last seat on a lifeboat from the titanic

it'd be the opposite for me. haunted == lucky.

The guy at the next desk always uses haunted=lucky.

When I first came to Cork I people used give me strange looks when I talked about gawking as in "sure we'll go and have a gawk"

haunted means lucky in cork vocab, don't know where it came from though ( like most cork words)

Haunted? I never heard it tbh. Is it a city or country thing?

"He was haunted" - He was very lucky.

A common saying in the country at least. I don't think I've heard it in the city.

Less of our vernacular is púca/banshee based

Right after 9/11, one of my room-mates told us all that his friend had moved offices out of the WTC three weeks beforehand, so everyone was commenting about how haunted he was.

My wife (American) had been telling people for years that he was brutally traumatised until I explained to her a few months ago what "haunted" meant.

    I'm, city, through and through.

    I'm haunted = I'm lucky.

    By "City" I meant Dublin.

Is there a recent threads page, or do you have to navigate through the forums?

Heard in the city too. Sometimes use it myself without actually knowing who used it.

Um. But if you're posting on the Cork City board that doesn't make any sense mate tbh.
