Donate a laptop

    Hi all,

I'm not 100% sure if this is allowed or if this is the right forum for it but my uncle is travelling out to South Africa in a few weeks as part of The Niall Mellon Township Challenge . He's gone out twice before and normally brings bits and pieces to donate to people in the townships. This time he's looking to bring a laptop (second hand) as long as it works. Is anyone willing to donate an old laptop for the trip? It doesn't have to be bang up-to-date but a working battery would help. I can do an OS install if needs be or we can get a replacement battery somewhere. I'm just looking to get the ball rolling anyway. I can post up pics of when he was out there before but I don't have them to hand at the mo.

    Cheers,

I have an old Toshiba Satellite you can have, with the provisos below:

    1) The modem doesn't work so you'd need to replace it.
    2) I'd want you to do a complete wipe/reinstall of OS
    3) The mouse port doesn't work, but the USB mouse works fine.
    4) Battery life isn't great, but works fine from mains. You could always get a new battery.

    Yours to take away.

I'll ask in work. There may be spare ones about. It'll be Friday before I'm back in the office though.

You may want to check in the laptop forum too. :)

Have you tried asking Dell or HP etc? Some of the big hardware manufacturers might be willing to help.

I think time is against us to be honest for contacting Dell and HP. He's away in little over a week so I'll look into contacting him well in advance of his next trip. Cheers for the suggestion though. I'll be in touch with the other lads in the thread by PM.
