Maybe you should try a new army?? I'm thinking of getting some of those new 'nids just because they are begging to be converted and painted :) With 'nids you can have loads of fun, same goes for chaos.

Try looking for a single model you really want to paint, and take your time, don't rush it. It might really help :D

    lol 1 teensie tiny problem
i just started a tyranid army and i was hoping that it would do as u said it would, unfortunately it didnt :(
i think i will try painting the carnifex or the hive tyrant maybe they will help :)

Painting is really more a matter of patience than anything else. When I started painting it was heroquest models with airfix oil based paints, and they sucked. When I bought Warhammer 40k I bought GW's brand acrylics and inks, and the quality of my 1st 30-40 models was basic. I learned to take my time with models ... all my character models taking 10+ solid hours to paint, Ahriman and Adaddon (the prides of my collection) taking 15 hours each spread over 3 days ... (both during my leaving cert, I found I did my best work while under external pressure) I had begun a couple of other models shortly after this, and if finished the final quality would have been far above the best of what I had produced up to then, and they were actually being done by request of Dublins GW store for their display case. Unfortunately when I went to college I no longer had the time, nor the interest to complete them.

Tis is my first post on Boards. I've been collecting 40k for 3 years. I've got a 3,500 point Space Marine force. I find it easier to motivate myself to paint if I have a friend there painting his own army. Pitching a well-painted all-imperial force against a hoard of angry orks/tiranids/chaos is quite satisfying. Also, does anyone hate Eldar/Dark Eldar as much as me, I mean REALLY hate them, and the lust to strike the crushing hand of the Imperium down on their puny heads.

Myself and Digi_Tilmitt are avid exremist Eldar haters. If we are allied to Craftworld/Dark Eldar in a game, we prefer to blast away at our allies than whatever Ork/Chaos/Tyranid foe opposes us. But we hate them aswell, mind. Just not quite as much Eldar. (Curse their pointy heads.)

Dare I ask why you hate the Eldar??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,644 ✭✭✭✭nesf

Why hate eldar? Why not? Get beaten enough times, or simply disliking the models is enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,657 ✭✭✭OSiriS

Well I don't know about other ppl, but my hatred of eldar stretched back to the original codex. The eldar were always a super powerful race with huge imbalances, and when they started re-writing codexes to remedy imbalances in other racxes I always looked foward to them doing likewise with the eldar, but everytime they brought out new models/vehicles/weapons, they would only add to the imbalance.

It seems that WH40K has been completely re-writen since then, so I don't know if that still follows.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,644 ✭✭✭✭nesf

They've redressed the imbalance quite well. Psycher powers are very toned down, the vehicles are like delicate china, and cannot stand upto heavy vehicles of other races.

The long and short of it is, in 3rd ed, they are yes very powerful, but every unit is very specialised, and very delicate, excluding avatars and wraithlords obviously! O and yes the avatar now is a paltry 80 pts and very much weaker with none of the old special immunities and rules :(

Still they are a very rewarding army but only in skilled hands. They are now very beateable by a well led army of any race.

is that the game with the bent little figurines and self made polystyrene bas'es which works on dice roll's its pretty bent in my opinion.

Well if it keeps all those neu-metal kids off the streets, then it's doing us all a great deal of good isn't it? :D

Plus its not a game it's a lifestyle, just like cs or quake.... but better for your eyes :)

ok fair enough it keeps kids away from cars, drink and the outside world but as for it being a life style, i duuno?

i really don't sea kids wearing elfish entrage , and roling dices to see which road they will take to school.

i suppose people have to do somethin' with there life!

1st things 1st, i cant beleive my post turned into something like this :p

secondly superman, Warhammer is a hobby much like computer games (as nesf said). but everyone has played boardgames, are they sad ? (eg "lets play trivial pursuit" reply "no i dont want dice rolls ruining my game and learning from the answers of those quistions is just stoopid") ok mebbe thats a bad example but thats the point im trying to make. people play it for the fun and can actually learn from the experience, organisation is a major part of life and organising an army for a battle using the 2nd ed rules) could be a real handfull.
all in all a lot of people enjoy doing this and other people have no right to criticise what other people think of this game, what hobbies do u have ? football ? music ? maybe others think these are stupid much like u are saying warhamer and tabletop gaming is. i hope i got my point across with that, i mean no offence to anyone from what i said but it is best this is known. anyway enuf of my ramblings :D
all gamers REJOICE for this is the day of reckoning >=]

look i like board games, hell, i like risk.
i like alot of organizing games but i just think its a tad bit bent to painting stupid 1 inch figurines, now if you got a problem with what i say about "warhammer 40k" you can use all your organizational skills and elves to get your own back.

ha ha ha i have a life you don't.

    muhah ha ha.

    no offence

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,657 ✭✭✭OSiriS

hmmm really ... how much different is it from painting landscapes, portraits etc? or do you think that Picasso, Rembrant, MichaelAngello are bent as well?

I presonally have engaged in art forms of all kinds, from water colors and yes miniature painting to digital art, each have had their own unique challenges, and miniature painting can be the most difficult and rewarding at times.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,644 ✭✭✭✭nesf

Hmmm, us 40k players have powerful allies, boards owners for instance....

I can understand someone not having alot of respect for it, it is v expensive, and in essence it's simply a more advanced form of toy soldiers! Still thos as OSiriS said, the artistic side cannot be overlooked. Recently a friend of mine studying art asked to see my Eldar army, her immediate reaction was how the **** do you pint something that small! Admittedly her skills lie in pencil and pastels, but she could still respect the ability of a minature painter.

Who knows in years to come minature enthuasiasts could be arguing over whether a piece is a genuine OSiriS :D

First the eldar rock the place.Second superman whats the deal you just came here to flame a folly as nesf said a certain owner of these boards likes gw aswell. And we dont have self made bases.Get youre facts right before going into flame mode.

I'm actually an Eldar player - they r0><0r!

Takes some skills to play with them though because everything is so specialised and delicate!

    Superman...
Would you be so kind as take your attitude and fuck off.

Have you any idea how long it takes to paint a model? It's very time consuming, but extremely rewarding. You can point at it and say "I did that" - have you ever been able to do that? Have you ever done anything of worth or that's made you feel proud? Obviously not, because all you can do to get your kicks is sit behind a screen and dish out grief to others because you have no friends or have never done anything with your life. None of us actually care for your opinion and I believe that boards.ie is better of without muppets like you.
i really don't sea kids wearing elfish entrage , and roling dices to see which road they will take to school.
You can't even read or write!
    Sea = the coast
See = the word you should have used
Maybe a return trip to 1st class would help you learn the fundamentals of the English language - punctuation and letter case are a must.
BTW - Dice is the plural of Die - it's a common mistake, so I'll let that one go. There is no such word as Dices.

    Actually, I pity you.

actually to be more precise Kharn, there is no such word as elvish, the proper term is silvian, but we'll let that go, there are 2 l's in rolling, and entorage is spelt like... oh yeah...

Look you're entitled to your opinion and i'm just pullin' the piss really, but why the **** would you want to express [that] particular opinion on a thread about GW on a board dominated by GW games!! It's like going slagging quake on the quake board, not a very good idea.

Still that said, everyone say hello to the first muppet to grace the wargmes board, we've finally become important enough to attract them!! /me sheds a tear I never thought I'd see the day when this little board grew up :D

Eldar are handicapped when it comes to battling. Except for the Bright Lance, their weapons suck. Also, I'm requesting that Games Workshop remove the Bright Lance from the game, the Eldar don't deserve to have it. The same goes for Dark Lances for the Dark Eldar, even though they aren't so good.

Guess who's been beaten every time he plays against Eldar??? :D

As pointed out before, it's an aquired skill to play well with them. Their weapons are wicked (again, if used properly)!

However back to the orginal question about painting......

Strangely I started to paint models again in the last few weeks after an absense of 12 years. I'm painting a dark elf army (actually the models are easier to paint this time round, but my eyes are not as good). I intend to paint a marine army at some stage and all I can think is

    1. 1 can of Spray paint
    2. 1 pot of bolter grey
    3. spray spray spary, dab dab dab, finished army thank you very much

My reason for choosing marines is simply that they are easier to paint and there's fewer of them for you points (thus less painting).
