Hey, just wondering what exactly this provides you with? I'm not the most computer literate person in the world but i get to buy a laptop for up to 1500 squid for nothing. I'm thinking of going for this one from dell...

It gives an option for the TV-tuner and i'm just wondering could someone dumb it down for me. What will it actually give me? will I be able to watch any of standard stations(RTE 1,2, TV3 and TG4) on my laptop by just hooking this up or will I need to have an aerial aswell. Here's a link I found for the tuner...

It costs an extra 80euro or so.
Would I bother with this or spend the 80euro upgrading some other part of the computer???

Any help would be much appreciated :)

I got the AverMedia USB 2.0 tuner with my Dell desktop. The tuner box takes input for co-axial (TV) cable, so you can connect your cable which will allow you to tune all the VHF stations you normally get on your TV. The package also includes a UHF aerial which if you connect it will allow you to get the irish stations RTE1, 2, TV3, TG4.

One prob I've had with the tuner is that the sound on it frequently fails from one day to the next. Sometimes when this happens, disconnecting the tuner from the USB port and reconnecting it sometimes restores the sound, but doesnt. Once the sound works, it is fine until the next time you power up the PC. WHen the sound isnt working, you just get a series of buzzes and clicks instead.

I though this problem was a compatibility problem with my Dell but I recently got a Sony Vaio laptop and when I installed the tuner, I had the same sound problem on it. I've looked on the AverMedia support site and they seem to be aware of a problem, but dont have a solution for it. Be interested to know if anyone else has encountered this?
