Anyone with any information I'd be really happy.

    Regards,
    Mot.

It's not THAT valuable money wise, more the stuff that's on it. Yeah backups etc. I know!!! DOH!

It was stolen in Drumcondra. ****ing stupid of me really. Don't really want to go into it as a feel a big enough of a tit already.

Wondering now if I could track it down using the MAC address if it was ever connected to the net.

    Hhhmmm! Probably not. Feckitty.

Have you got a service tag or serial number?, it will help in identifying it if and when it surfaces.

You don't seem to be selling anything...

@ Steveland: That's hardly a helpful comment really.....If I was looking for a second-hand laptop I'd look both here on boards and at other sources (free-ads etc). If I've read about a stolen model here on boards and came across it via a free-ad then I'd be in a position to help out a fellow boardster by picking up on it in time to notify the authorities.....Surely that makes sense?

    @ Poblachtach - What the F?

@ Motrocco - If you have the TAG then notify Dell who will flag it as a stolen machine on their systems. A possibly unsuspecting and innocent buyer of your laptop could contact Dell in the near future at which point Dell will be happy to notify the Gardaí. Incidentally, HP and IBM will do the same if anyone else is caught out by thiefs. Good luck with the search.

If you ever used the Dell site to download drivers for the laptop from another machine (the one where you insert the service tag or serial number), the numbers could be stored in the cookies.

Good luck. Hope you get it back - and find the SOB who took it.

Perhaps I should've been more clear...

He's not selling anything so he shouldn't be posting it here...

Perhaps the computers forum for advice on how to find it through the MAC address...

From the title it looks like he's selling a stolen laptop...

MAC addresses don't leak out on to the Internet. They are only transmitted around your local lan (wireless, cabled etc in your home/work).

If you do want to try to find it by Mac address you'd need to get somebody with Kismet running on a laptop and go around the streets, hope the person has the laptop on and its transmitting the mac address far enough to your car/backpack with pda in it etc.

Oh and bring a hurley stick. Thieves hate them. Gives them headaches :D

Or call the cops.. but you'll be waiting a while.

EDIT: if you don't have a password, and they load up Outlook and read (for example) your eircom net email, call eircom and ask for the Ip address of who last accessed your account. If you are logged in to msn on the laptop and they want to mess you around they may actually talk to you. If thats the case try and get them to accept a file (preferably a sub7 infected file) and do netstat -a in a dos window and get their ip address. Now that would be tough.

There's no firewall, a/v and possibly a copy of sub7 on it already. It didn't see much of the REAL internet. Would it make a difference? Unless I could remote control it into someones car and drive it back to me I think sub7 will be of little use. Although, they may not change the name associated with the machine SOOOO......

Na you are missing the point, if Subseven went online you would get the IP unless it was on a proxy and from the IP from the IP the ISP and after contacting the Gards and the ISP ultimately the user account that is accessing the web, Problem is that it will end up with someone who knows stuff and they will probably disable the modem and reinstall windows, chances are whoever buys it will receive it as you left it with no changes made. You can be sure it will be washed before it goes oline unless the person is stupid, Dell may have a chance of finding it but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Tell your ISP too in case someone uses the machine as is to connect, phone them soon and ask when was the last time that the pc was online.

they should really have a gps chip installed in laptops now. it would be a great help.
My mates lappy got nicked while he was in collage, and thankfully got it back when one off the instructors noticed the theif showing it to a mate in the jacks.
i do hope you find some info on who stole it.

    That's annoying.

Oddly enough (and this is not a joke) I'll almost certainly be flogging my old inspiron 7500 with a 40GB drive relatively soon once I get a lightweight replacement. Given that I'll presumably be offering it on boards it's just as well when I bought it that I went for the 15.4" screen rather than the 15" lest I look like a Drumcondra laptop thief now five years later.

Getting Dell to tag it as a stolen system sounds like a pretty good idea.

I work in the dept that flags stolen systems here, basically what happens is we get details, flag up the sys, then if someone calls in with it we call you with whatever details we can find so you can give them to the police. To be perfectly honest, it's a longshot, but always good to have all bases covered.
