Well actually it’s for my wife who's expressing an interest so I thought I'd pick up some books on Buddhism, covering I don’t know, say beliefs, philosophy and introduction sort of stuff.

Any suggestions you would have would be great.

Since I am a Buddhist I feel a little qualified to answer. The problem is that there are many sects of Buddhism and they differ widely in beliefs. For example Mahayana Buddhism believe one can achieve enlightenment in this life time (I am one of these), Hinayanna Buddhism believe you achieve enlightenment over an incalculable number of lifetimes. There are also traditional schools, and there are modern schools. My advice would be to Wiki and follow the links as they occure. Then, when your wife has a better feeling for what interests her, it will be a lot easier to select appropriate books. Can you say what interests she has expressed to daste and I will be very happy to try steer you in an appropriate direction.

To be honest I’d say she has no forward knowledge and is highly unlikely to sit down in front of a pc looking at wiki. I've no knowledge myself and tbh am not really that interested, I just though I'd pick up one or two as wee gift for her, but I'll be down in easons today anyway so I'll just pick up one or two that look like 'Buddhism for dummies'.
Thanks for the feedback, its appreciated. I'll pay more attention when picking that I would most likely have before your post. Didn’t release it was broad as you say.

I'm not an expert or anything but I really like book Buddhism Plain and Simple by Steve Hagan.
