VirtualDub question

    Hi
Yesterday a few of you recommended to me VirtualDub for trimming down video files (thanks!). Just a quick question - now that I have my video cropped the way I want it, how do I save it as a downloadable file? so far I have only been able to save it to about 8000mbs or so. The original capture (using SnagIt) was 200mbs, so the cropped version should be less, but how do I reduce the file to this size?
    Thanks again, appreciated.

By using a compression codec when re-encoding the video.

Sounds like you're currently saving it as uncompressed mpeg. Can't remember exactly how to do it but it should be simple enough to specify what codec to use to compress it through the 'Video' menu.

edit: Don't forget to compress the audio too, its a common mistake. I've seen shoddily encoded videos before where the audio was taking up as much disk space as the compressed video.

    That looks like the problem alright. although Im not sure what compression to use. The list is;

    Cinepak Codec by Radius
    Indeo Video 5.10
    Intel Video 4:2:0 Video V2.50
    Intel Indeo(R) Video R3.2
    Indeo Video 4.5
    Intel IYUV Codec
    Microsoft H.261 Video Codec
    Microsoft H.263 Video Codec
    Microsoft RLE
    Microsoft Video 1

    ???

Thanks, as you can probably tell I have very limited knowledge with this!

Open virtual dub. Go file open and open your AVI. Click Audio - Direct copy. Click Video - compression. Select your codec (recommend Xvid). Then file - save Avi. Will now process your video into compressed Avi using selected codec.

You're probably best off using DivX or xvid codecs... if you have them installed they should show up on the list.
Other than that, you could just download Windows Media Encoder (stand-alone app) and convert the file to a .wmv ... I like this program, it's fast, flexable, gives good output file sizes, with no f*cking around at all.

If you've got an AMD CPU, Xvid should encode faster for you. The same goes for Intel and DivX.

BTW you may need to install Xvid codec as it's not on your list so you may need to download this codec.

Yeah, you've got bugger all usefull codecs there. Get the XVid codec from www.xvid.org or google for the k-lite codec pack and install the various codecs (including xvid, divx and lame mp3 for audio) with that. And as Stephen says don't forget to select an audio codec too (such as Lame mp3) or you'll waste loads of space with uncompressed audio.
