Rupert's companies tend to treat Great Britain and Ireland as one territory with several regions (e.g. his newspapers are available everywhere with regional variations and he has made a point of making Sky's channels available in Ireland, some with regional advertising).

I'm sure that if he did have any kind of controlling stake in C5 he would make sure that it was available to as many people as possible, hence increasing it's advertising revenues. While many people don't like Mr Murdoch, I'm sure everyone would agree that he has an extremely sharp business mind. If there's money to be made, he will get it.

However, as far as I know BSkyB's future involvement with Channel 5 is speculative at the moment.

    Time will tell.

It's a shame (for our sakes) that more broadcasters don't take a leaf out of his book in terms of market penetration (ie. ITV, Channels 4 and 5). There's gold in that there Emerald Isle !!

exactly what i was thinking reading the newspaper in the hairdressers this morning. and speaking of Mr. Murdoch, he is great for bringing me out of the slump of bog standard television stations

don't forget Channel 4 aim a lot of their advertising towards the republic but only those with cable, near the border or with MMDS can receive it :(

edit: forgive my poor misunderstanding of the quotes thing

I think Channel 4 just take whatever money they are given. The market price is set by demand and obviously there is a demand for advertising space on Channel 4's Northern Ireland region, no matter where that advertising originates. If the advertising starts to dry up as more people go for Sky, then they may have a re-think.

As for Channel 5 - the Astra analogue service is finishing on December 31st this year, so the only way to receive the channel in ROI from now on will be via overspill.
