    When entering a game, why is a "dead small blind" sometimes posted?

    do you mean why is their sometimes a big blind on his own...?

    That person may have been playing, and then sat out for a few minutes. While they were sitting out they missed their turn to be both the BB and the SB. When they rejoin the table they have to pay both, otherwise they could do this every time before they're due to be blinds and pay nothing at all.

    I think that's how it works.
