Sick of IT support roles

I've been working in IT support roles now for over 6 years (I'm 26) and on the way home from work I found myself contemplating looking for something else to do, but IT is all I know.

I have no way of supporting myself if I go back to college and I really don't know what to do.

    Anybody any idea's ???

Are you sick of IT or of support? :)

There are plenty of places to go in IT that don't involve support.

Forgot about thinking that IT is all you know... what else interests you?
    There's always time to learn.
Perhaps do an evening course in something.
You should be able to support yourself through that.
Your IT skills will always come in useful no matter what you do.

Why don't you just quit. It may be a hard proposition, but just do it.

I'm 24 and am setting up an electronics company on Nov 1st. I'm basically gonna work in a bar 2 nights a week to pay my rent and office space. It'll be **** for a while and if I'm not making money by Xmas 2006, I'm gonna pack it in.

You can get a 2 day a week job in Dublin, live and persue other interests with the rest of your time. Why don't you do a bit of web programming on the side? Or a bit of IT consulting? Schools are always looking for IT people to come in and fix their networks for them on a casual basis.

What type of applications have you been supporting?

If you like IT do teh MCSA or MCSE. Can complete it in 6 months. Coupled with your support experience you'll easily pik up a higher paid job as a network admin(if that appeals to you).

If it's helpdesk work you're sick off (I don't know how you could even last 6 years doing that), look at some of the IT companies around the place, you could get into doing installations (much more fun), or on-the-road support which is still a bit of a pain but at least you're dealing with different customers all the time, most of whom are happy to see you (unless you're called back 'cos you screwed up last time ;) ). Being able to drive helps.

Once I get my drivers licence sorted I might do that instead.

to be honest, ive just moved job, and i was looking outside of IT.
i was a techie and an engineer for about 5 years, and then went into IT sales.
I couldnt go back to a support role now.

I have just gone into an Account Managers role, and I guess my path ahead is somewhere either in key account management or in sales management. or consultancy.

but i actually looked to get a job in the games industry, bu outside of programing and designing, it seems pretty hard to get in. look to do what you enjoy doing if you have figured it out yet...

CPL are offering jobs and you can do a course A+ and networking for 1 year. I would say you would get a job as a network admin somewere after.

You'd want MCSE or Cisco as a bare minimum for network admin, all A+ (etc) would get you is more helpdesk shíte if you're lucky... although it's a good start if you're going down that route... it's a good confidence builder if nothing else.

I know the feeling... sometimes I'd rather be herding goats in Outer Mongolia.
I say let the immigrants come in their droves, it's just more goat-herding jobs opening up for me ;)

    Soon... oh yes... soon...

Just an update on this thread.

Started in THE big financial company as a helpdesk co-ordinator, not IT related and the money is fantastic, 10k more than I was getting in IT roles. Because I had expierience of how helpdesks should be run and had an IT backround I walked into the role.

Gone are the days off cleaning mice balls and replacing monitors :D
