i recently decompressed a rar file i got via email and after that i cant delete/rename folders in none of the partitions on my IBM R51E laptop. I can delete files. I cheked for viruses with Norton & Avast and also checked for spyware with spybot & adaware. I thnk the file system is damaged . I had run "chkdsk" and "sfc" and no use. Is there any tool that cud repair my file system other than restoring my laptop?

older versions of winrar have exploitable buffer overflow while processing headers.
its possible some code ran on your system without your knowledge, and is hooking an api.
although, this is just a guess..

suggest you forward rar file to av company, maybe they will give you some info on it.

    .....

Erm, first rule of computing, do NOT.... do NOT and I repeat do NOT open anything that gets sent to you via email that you weren't expecting, even if it is from someone you know.

Don't forget to get verbal confirmation from the sender if you did not request it.

have you tried safe mode to bypass startup junk ?
have you used autoruns etc. in case it's unknown malware running in the background ?

have you tried as another user ?

right click on the folders to see if you have permissions to delete them in security - don't forget you can't delete a folder if it contains a file that is running or sometimes one of the same name.

into Dos and try REN there to see if you get an Access denied message or not
    MD test
    REN test test2
    MD test
    RD test
    CACLS test
    etc.
