Today i just tried to install command and conquer generals on the comp.

So i put cd one in the dvd drive and cd 2 in the aopen cdrw drive -

    Cd's started to spin -

Then i heard this very loud bang coming from the Aopen drive - Pulled the plug straight away and removed the drive heard little bits of cd inside the drive.

Decide lets crack the drive open have a look at the pics and decide for yourself........

Come to think of it i seen something on discovery a couple of weeks ago and it was a mythbusters and they tried to do the same.

Cause when the cd is inserted the 52x drive spins it to fast and the cd heats up and snaps thats what the bang is that came from the drive.

I have never seen this with any of my drives, and this drive worked fine installed comand and conquer plenty of times with it in the past.

    i dunno know.

I can remember the one was some no name brand, not sure what the other was. I also heard a loud bang, opened the tray and the cd was just in pieces  . I just thought i had not placed the cd down properly and it had caught on something, but you reckon its heated up.
Either way i was bummed, i now have cd1,2, and 4 of my colin mcrae :(.

Never happened in any of my drives but I've seen this problem in work. Will the retailers provide replacement CDs if you show/send them the shards?

Nah pretty sure they won't :(

Well they should. They'll find it very hard to disprove a claim that the CD was obviously defective if your other CDs have not exploded and continue to work normally after you've cleaned out the drive. Many guarantees specifically cover defective media.

Mind you I have my suspicions that some drive models contribute to this problem.

They should. You've paid for a software licence to play the game, not just a CD.

I've heard of this happening before with CDs that have a hair line crack at th inner edge of the CD, Never seen it before tho.
In that mythbusters episode they spun those CDs up to 9000rpm (I think) and they didn't break unless they were damaged beforehand (Again, I think that's the case, memorys a bit sketchy!!). What's the rpm of a 52x drive?

52x depends on the part of the disk it is reading.

    have a look here:

I think they are taking 52x too litterally, again its really only on the ourter edge of the disk. Judging from the sounds from a drive, I would say no more than 7000 RPM

[edit] looks like im not too far off, 10,000 RPM: http://www.powerlabs.org/cdexplode.htm [/edit]
