Strange Eircom Dialup Connection Activity

    Hey all,

I have been having a problem with my home computer for the past couple of months. Whenever I dial up Eircom, it seems like my PC has connected. Then when I try to open firefox or iexplore both look like they are looking up google (my start page is google) but return “the connection with ...cannot be established” etc etc.

Now I figured this was something to do with Eircom so I contacted them and they asked me to change the DNS setting from auto assign to a static one which they gave me. (Even though I have been using the obtain a DNS automatically for 7 years and I do think it strange that this would effect my PC all of a sudden.) Anyway it made no difference, so I replaced the modem, still no difference, I am just after replacing the phone line and nothing changed. So regardless of my settings I need to dial up and disconnect until I get connected (usually about 6/7 times).

I believe this could be a DNS problem as that would make sense, but I am at a loss to fix this. Any suggestions (bar taking a hammer to my PC :) would be appreciated

    Thanks

    Windows XP professional

I had the same issue with eircom, when i questioned it, i got the "snotty nosed femal voice"...data is not guaranteed, just voice ! in other words, tough, even though my internet bill could be as high as 100 euro every 2 months, just from dialing up 7 or 8 times each time to get a connection... in the end i went with UTV and get 180 hrs a month for 25 euro.... can dial as many times as i want to get connected now for nothing extra.

something else i have noticed, when i dial up sometimes it just keeps hanging on the logon page or cannot connect to remote computer..... but if i take my phone off the hook just after i dial up and listen to the beeps and stuff it connects me straight away.... you should try this, and if someone knows why this works i would love to know also.

Did you try a different ISP? Get iolfree or something like that and it would help you isolate your problem.

It sounds like a DNS or a dodgy modem issue, but since you have investigated both its hard to know. Perhaps it is some other software you are running (e.g. firewall) that is misbehaving. A fresh install of windows may be the most painless solution.

If you call eircom about the line make sure not to mention internet problems.

You have either static, crosstalk, or interference of some description on the voice. You dont care about the internet.

And its an intermittent problem. :)

yeah i agree with your comments. i think a new isp is the best option, i just find it hard to believe eircom can be so poor at providing a service + to ring tech support costs something like 1euro a minute.

but like oleras said, id love to know what is actually causing the problem.

just for other ppl who read this

i did have a firewall and thought this to be the problem so i removed it(zonealarm) but it made no difference so i turned off the windows firewall too for a little while to see if it made any difference but nope nothing.

anyway for now im going to sus out a new isp.

just saw the latest comment maidhc

"You have either static, crosstalk, or interference"
is there anyway I can test for these. what are the symptoms.

    Thanks for all the comments

I was just saying if you do ring up eircom to complain about the quality of the line, they wont want to hear about it if you say the problem is related to the internet -as oleras said.

You may need to invent a problem with your voice line in order to make them solve your problem.

I have been with IOL for a good few years now on dialup, and they are pretty good. Not perfect I guess, but i'm happy enough.
