Yeah I found that site there yesterday, I was reading their article on the whole static electricty thing and its got me a little worried. They seem to be making a really big deal of it although most other sites ive checked just say to touch the side of the metal case every now and again....anyone thats built pcs before have any comment on the whole static electricty thing? It says to avoid putting it together on carpet but thats most likely where ill be putting it all together??

Yeah, I would tend to agree with the "other sites". Just touch something that's grounded every so often, a radiator is a good example. Try not to put it together on carpet, and try not to be wearing synthetic materials when putting it together - both build up a lot more static charge than normal.
Don't overly worry about it, just discharge yourself before you start, and then every 5 or 10 minutes. Another option is to put in the PSU first, and plug that into an electricity outlet. This grounds your entire PC case, and since you will be touching the case a lot, prevents static build-up.

Every room in my house has carpet...apart from the kitchen but its v.small. Maybe if i brought in a table to where the comp im using at the moment is so i could put it together on the table and at the same time be able to read this monitor to go by guides etc on the internet???

I work on my pc on the floor of my carpeted room while wearing socks and any sort of clothes all the time.

Just leave the powersupply plugged in and keep touching the case all the time.

On top of the metal part of your sink is a good place to work too, since its earthed and not dusty. As long as u dont drop your 400 euro gfx card in the basin, that wouldnt be fun

Having the powersupply plugged in though....is that not a bit dangerous seeing as the case is open etc?

No. I know people who use pcs without cases - thats right, they have the motherboard on the desk with everything connected to it, spread around.

Im not totally sure about plugging in the PSU first - connecting psu to the motherboard while live sounds very bad to me. You say you have another pc, have a side panel on it open while youve got the aforementioned guide open on the screen, and touch the casing to ground yourself every now and then.

Play with some Lego, preferably Technic, Duplo doesn't really cut it unless you're buying a Dell.
