Most likely a doctored photo, but if the rspca are talking about it it could well be a true story, and if so then it's absolutely disgusting.

I doubt it was true, the sun aren`t the most reliable.

It doesn`t make sense to put a hook through the nose as it would probaly tear, something like a harness would be better.

    Haha, not real.

It's the reactions to threads like this that make me wonder if I really was the only person who fell over laughing when Brian from Spaced talked about his dog Colin's untimely death at the wheels of an articulated lorry.

    "The colours... So vibrant!"

    And yes, I love dogs.

some of us are animal lovers and for me it would be dogs in particular, personally speaking if i seen anyone harming any animal and dogs in particular i would kick the living c*ap out of them, and it's not very clever or mature to joke about dogs getting mutilated or killed now is it.

Uhh... it's just sad and inhumane cruelty to animals. Some weird people nowadays...

Bollocks is it real... the dog has a collar on, who the fsck puts a collar on something it's about to drown / feed to a shark? In case the wee bowser gets lost under the sea and the magic mermaid takes it home?

    Bollocks.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 31,967 ✭✭✭✭Sarky

And did you ever stop to think about how the poor shark felt?

If it's not real then why then are the RSPCA advertising it?This DOES happen believe me,ive heard about this sort of thing before way before that rag the sun published this story, this does happen unfortunately, those responsible deserve life in prison use them as shark bait the choice can be theirs.

I take extreme offence to that. Do you think dogs are the only animals that feel pain? The shark has it worse off. How do think IT dies? Merciful lethal injection? A bullet to the head?

This issue isn't about sharks though is it,of course cruelty to ANY animal is wrong and should be roundly condemned.

    1. No dog would allow someone to shove a hook of that size through it's upper lip - one of the most sensitive parts of a dog.
    2. There is no evidence of traumatic injury which one would expect to see from a struggling dog or from prongs being pushed through flesh.
    3. The hooks are simply not suitable for shark-fishing. The gape (distance between the hook-point and the shank) is too narrow and the length of the shank is too long. There is no way that a hook of that depiction would even stick into a sharks mouth.
    4. The hook is barbless. Anyone who's used barbless hooks knows that they will just fall out unless constant pressure is applied. So the dog would just have to shake it's head and the entire contraption would fall out. So would the shark so again it's useless for shark-fishing; all shark hooks are barbed.
    5. The article mentions that the dogs legs are tied together with wire....why? The dog would just sink and sharks are attracted as much to the noise of an injured or unusual swimmer as they are to the scent. A lump of furry meat sinking to the bottom wouldn't attract anything until it had been dead for a few days.
    6. Hooking a dog through the lip is pointless and impractical. The minute the dog hit the water, the pressure from the tow would cause the hook to be torn from the lip immediately. What's the point fishing with an unbaited hook?
    7. The dogs mouth is open. If it was being towed, the mouth would fill with water and the dog would simply skate across the surface of the sea while at the same time making sure the hook was ripped out.

if you're going to use a dog as sharkbait you'd need to place treble hooks into the back of its neck and rump, inject it with a gallon of fish-oil, sew its lips together and cut of its legs so that it's more aero-dynamic. You'd also have to sew on some pectoral fins to stop it spinning around underwater and tangling the line. Which is why most shark fishermen would sooner use a fish as bait.

Hmmmm, you might be making a point, that dog may have made a nice stew or something. At the end of the day, maybe if we feed the sharks enough dogs they will stop eating people, wouldnt that surely be a step in the right direction?

Ah, so now it's life in prison? What happened to pushing spikes through their faces and using them as shark bait, or kicking the living "c**p" out of them?
