Hi lads, myself like a lot of yourselfs (probably/maybe/not) have returned to college recently and found the same sh*ty programs on the PC's. I want to get as many cool programs on my memory pen as possible so i can plug it and use applications like Firefox, Thunderbird, Fillzilla, NVU. So far i have installed those 4 programs without any hassle, (i'm using the portable firefox & tbird clinets btw, the fillzilla and nvu just installed into a folder on the memory pen).

But what other programs can i put on my memory pen that i might need or what else is available out there. I'm hoping to get some kind of an instant messanger program, i looked around the forum for a post about "MSN Messanger Lite" which can be run from a memory pen but i cant find it. So if anyone knows where i can get it, or similiar programs.......

www.miranda-im.org will do you for MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, Jabber (Google talk and more...).

The only problem you'll have is getting through your college firewall - you'll need to look into putty (and then portable putty) and port tunnelling ...

Also, make sure you get the portable versions of firefox, thunderbird and what not - a quick google reveals all. The same guy made portable open office too.

Bear in mind that if you get caught knowingly going around your college computer/net restrictions, you could get into trouble (check your AUP).

If you check the AUP you won't do anything on your college computers, ever. ;)

wicked i got portable open office, that should come in handy. Its a 90.6mb installation on the pen, but i have a 1024mb pen so why not have an office alternative with me everywhere. All i need to do now is to install GAIM on my memory pen and i'm all set!

Does anyone know of a portable mp3 player that works on a memory pen or even a portable digital studio?

For anyone who is interested in installing
    Firefox
    Thunderbird
    Open Office
    Sunbird
    AbiWorld
or NVU on a memory pen. here is the link

Nice, it is good to see the more and more people are taking the initiative to take it upon themselves to use better and more secure programs then the rather poor selection provided by most colleges.
At the college I go to, they have Dell computers each equipped with a crappy Pentium 4. They all run Windows XP, with IE as the default browser and Office 2003 *vomits*.

This makes me sad, sad for the people who have to pay the bills! Site licences are not cheap, but as much as I, or the college IT guys would like to see all there PC's running Linux, they cant. It is not because they dont want to (the college IT guy is a linux fan, his office is full of Unix books), but because windows has become the de facto standard and if people in the college learned something other then windows then they would have a problem working for a company that only uses windows. The same is true for Office 2003. The only reasons they still use IE are: 1) It comes with windows so no extra software to install and update. 2) You can lock the settings to prevent users changing the proxy server settings (stupid reason, but it is used in the Waterford City Library).

i bought a new 4 gig usb pen drive from corsair.
i use a lot of programs installed off it. also use it as my windows xp installation c.d :) its really handy cos my c.d got scratched and im not bothered to ring microsoft for a new copy.
also, i use all my music, firefox, open office, aol, trillian and irc off the pen drive. so its not too much of a problem. just make sure u dont run outa space as it then goes into super slow mode... :P
