The Point in Dublin is to be closed on Dec 31st 2005, as renavations are to begin next year on the building.

What venue do you think will replace it when it does?

I imagine that anyone who would have played the point would now go for Marley park or the RDS. To be honest it's a fairly awful venue, soundwise and 'atmosphere' wise and I'm not sure that renovations can do anything to improve it.

None of those poll choices are indoor arenas, so they can hardly replace The Point. Croke Park, Marley Park and Lansdowne Road are usually used for summer gigs, and even then it would be pricey to have gigs there every so often. Next biggest venue would be the RDS, yet it's not as large, and I've heard numb things regarding sound.

Does anyone actually know what they're planning to do to The Point and how long it's going to go on for? Remember hearing about this awhile back.

Id have to say the RDS, its the only one capable of holding anywhere near as much people as the point. You cant put Croke Park and Marley park and all them in the same category as they are not used for 9 months of the year

RDS I'd think - outdoor venues won't really work come winter and the Olympia, Vicar Street et al would be too small for the current popular hip-hoppin' and your bip-boppin' bands that'd usually play the Point.

Well i'd like Ambassador to replace it, though it never could. The bands I'd like to see I'd prefer to see in ambassador anyway. Croke Park has been doing well for gigs lately, reckon they'd get it. But RDS no doubt have good management and so they try to keep control of that scale event. There's punchetstown and slane also guys.. Also it could never be Vicar st as that's run by Akien promotions, the point was a MCD thing really. And it's the place you play only if you can't fill the point. Won't be Olympia for same reason as Ambassador and I don't really know Marley Park.. What happened there before?

I personally guarantee that the point WILL NOT close in 2005. It is scheduled for 2007. And should reopen in 2009. Where it will be even bigger and better ( by the fact it couldn't get worse!)
