Great, macro is brilliant at times. I think the deadline is a bit long, try make it two weeks maybe?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 524 ✭✭✭Lisapeep

So macro basically means big things?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,496 ✭✭✭jlang

No, generally macro means close ups, but I suppose anything that looks larger than life would qualify. There's usually a special macro mode on cameras to focus close to the lens. Expect lots of bugs and flowers, but hope the prize goes to something else.

damnit i always seem to miss/forget about these :(
if this was posted about a week ago i got some nice looking shots out in my garden, flowers are all starting to die off now so might be hard to get something like that again....never know though, will try get back out with the ol macro mode going and see what i can catch :)

Email them to Rhymus with the pics details and your Boards.ie username. http://boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=260773

    S

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Eye

was kinda wondering that myself as there is no email address mentioned anywhere i could see....or else i'm going blind :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

ok i've sent ya off an entry, see what ya think of it :)

can i assume you can enter more than once?

if so, good, coz i'll go on a hunt over the next few days with the camera to try and get some more shots :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

I'll stick with one entry per person again.. not sure I want to return to the days of yore where I got about 40 images to work through...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Eye

ok, since it's limited to 1 entry per person, and i've already sent off my entry would it be alright to post up an image or two here to maybe inspire people or give them some ideas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

    fire away

ok well here are a few sample images to get those creative juices flowing :)

I was out in my back garden the other day and just started taking a few pot shots with the macro settings on a Minolta Dimage 7i and below you can see just a few of the results. I've had to scale them down quite a bit from their original size firstly to get them on screen without scroll bars and secondly to reduce the file sizes. Just to be on the safe side i also put on a bit of a "Do not copy" logo on it but it should'nt interfere with the images too much as you'll see the subjects just fine.

Personally i think the second one is the best of them, managed to get it focused just right.

For anyone interested all photos were taken on a Minolta Dimage 7i in macro mode, i just set it to auto and shot away.

    not too shabby..

Very nice pics. I think the 1st is the best. Lovely flower.
I'll get out and start snapping soon.

    Nice shots

Ya should post em up :)
    I'd love to see em.

i'll see what i can do for you tomorrow, if i get a chance i'll resize a few more of them and post em up. it'll probably be after lunch sometime though as i'll be out all morning with my brother hopefully trying to get some snapshots of the partial solar eclipse with his scope and camera :)

    Sound sweet.
lol no rush at all buddy. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Eye

ok well as the solar eclipse was a waste of time, too cloudy to see a thing, i had a bit of free time and resized a few more of those pics of the flower for ya kjt.

since myself and my brother were a bit bored waiting for clouds to clear we went off on a bit of a hunt for spiders and anything else we thought would look cool, might start a thread in the photography board sometime with some of my pics and see what people think, but for now lets stick to the macro flowers ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 679 ✭✭✭Eye

here's one last one that would'nt fit into the last post ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,057 ✭✭✭kjt

Lovely pics. I like the last 1, its a fair bit away. But with a bit of imagination it sort of looks like a little world...

Or mayb I'm crazy. Either way they look good. Havta give macro's a bash during the week. Not too many flowers alive though.

    Thanks

I agree! One competition a per month is not enough - there should be at least two competitions a month. One week deadline for entries and then one week of judging - how bout it?

Sounds good to me. Must start taking part in em.
    Probably get slaughtered though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,645 ✭✭✭Shrimp

Yeah thats good 2 comps a month

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,496 ✭✭✭jlang

Dunno about that - one week isn't really enough time, unless we're just going to submit shots from our archives. I like it the way it is - not too much pressure. If they overlapped or if the next one gets started on the same day as the judging for the last one, maybe. Anyway, rymus puts some time into it, prolly not fair to push more work on him. Maybe have a rymus-run competition and a someone-else-run competition each month?

Or if you're just looking for competitions to enter, there's plenty out there on the interweb. I like looking at the ones from the forums on dpreview.com (latest), and also here but feel the standard gets a bit too excellent for me or my camera.

To get back to the theme of this month's comp, check out these for some macro inspiration.

yeah woohoo, 2 competitions a month. It's not like I have anything else to do. Maybe I should just give up my full time job and run photo challenges for a living? Sounds lucrative....

Unless I win the lotto this week, it's one challenge per month.

no, sorry about that slumped.. I'm just too busy shooting for national geographic and FHM to even consider taking boards photo challenge on full time :D

I don't understand what's so time consuming about the competition. People send you emails, you post them here - how long can it take!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

long enough that I dont want to have to do it more than once a month. case closed.

I'd say it takes quite a bit of time. Or at least some time, nice of himself to do it.
Maybe you could do the other one Lisapeep? ;) if its not 'that' time consuming.
Doubt I'd have the time myself anyways.

yeah,i'd imagine it takes a fair while tbh. Linking and posting and sorting all the emails. Everyone is free to start their own one if they want.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,561 ✭✭✭Rhyme

I think one fixed competition is best, lets you keep to some kind of schedule rather than split between 2 or 3.

Finally downloaded the manual for my camera and as it turns out i do have a proper macro mode on it  ...Flickr likes 'em.

here endth the discussion on frequency of challenges. If anyone else feels compelled to comment on it, expect a severe slapping.

The photos in those competitions are indeed of a very high standard - have you entered any yourself?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,496 ✭✭✭jlang

Not yet, but would if I thought I had an eligible pic. Some of the other folks' pics that've been entered here would be up to scratch. Anyway, shows us what we can aspire to.

I presume it starts on the 20th, when the competition closes. I hope so because I've narrowed down my macro selection to 20 photos - now I just have to choose one of those and enter it.

I hate doing that, though - it's like judging the rest of them and finding them wanting somehow.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

on or around the 20th, I'll be away for a few days but I'll have my laptop with me so while uploading photos I might just have chance to sort out the competition.... if not, juding will more than likely begin err, tomorrow morning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 524 ✭✭✭Lisapeep

Tomorrow morning? Really? I'd actually like that!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,819 ✭✭✭rymus

wowzers! I'll do it right now then!

Entries for challenge 6 are no longer being taken; apologies to anyone that thought they had 4 more days.
