    Any help or advice on this appreciated.
    i recently downloaded the new version of windows media player for my Windows ME computer and when i rebooted the computer displays the wallpaper and nothing else, no buttons,icons,start menu just the wallpaper.
    Restarted in safe mode and still the same and also tried to start at last good configuration but still nothing,any ideas???

    sounds like explorer.exe isn't running, hit ctrl-alt-delete -> file -> new task -> explorer -> ok

    try diagnostic startup from msconfig or system restore

    btw, which version of media player, me only goes as far as 9, 10 is only for xp

    Can you un-install the media player?

    Can you run Anti Virus, or even have it installed?

    Yeah, what AOD said

    I know that this won't help you at all, but Windows ME is REALLY bad and buggy. Suggest get a different operating system.

    Here's one thing to try

    When you go CTRL + ALT + DELETE have a look in the proces list for svchost. You will probably see a few of them. Look for one that is consuming a lot of memory and/or CPU. Kill it. Do you get to desktop after that? If so install and update antivirus. AVG and www.trend.com Housecall are pretty good.

    Use System Restore.

    Insert your Win Me emergency boot disk (you *do* have one, right?) and follow the directions
