Folks, the new Geforce Go 7800GTX for laptops is available from Dell. Supposedly it offers a similar performance to the desktop version but with reduced power requirements. Expect a 3DMark05 score of about 6700 - 6900 at stock clocks.
I have just ordered the following laptop:

    XPS M170
    Pentium M780 2.26 Ghz
    2048MB DUAL CHANNEL DDr2 RAM (533 Mhz)
Nvideo GeForce Go 7800 GTX Graphics
80 GB 7200 RPM Hard Drive
    17 Inch widescreen 1920 X 1200 Monitor
Wireless, Bluetooth, DVD Writer, Lock, Docking Station

    Can't wait til it arrives!

Have to say that before 03 i would never have looked twice at Dell. But in recent times their Laptops are unreal. I mean a mate of mine bought a Laptop from Dell and it really is amazing for games etc. Its good to see that Dell have managed to put such high power into their laptops including the new 7800GT and control the heat that the high end devices omit.

I know you probably didn't mean it but it sounds seriously like an advertisment

A friend of mine has one of those crazy dell laptops with the desktop prescott CPU's in them, with the big stupid looking cooling thing bolted on to the bottom of it. It weighs a ton and looks silly, but it is fast ;)

More of a desktop replacement than a laptop. The PSU is also a massive brick.

However, since the above is a pentium M, it should be somewhat more portable. I can't imagine the battery lasting long with the 7800GTX running at full speed though :)

The new Evesham Voyager with the 7800GTX Go in it lasted 1.5 hours on battery whilst watching a DVD. (www.bit-tech.net)

I have the XPS2 with the 6800 Ultra and its a savage machine alright.. Seemingly it can be upgraded but I will have to wait and see.

There is no sign of it being launched here yet though..

Watching a DVD isn't going to cause much of a load on the GPU. I'd like to see how it fares playing, say, Battlefield 2?

I have been checking it regularly since 7am..

Anyway, I called them and the price is an absolute disgrace...

They recently renamed the systems from an Inspiron XPS Gen 2 to an XPS M170.. Nothing else was changed in the system, i.e. every part is the same, even the BIOS..

Coinciding with the rebranding was a change in the pricing. A base system with 512mb RAM costing 2,300 has now become the same system with (1GB doubled for free) 2GBs of RAM for over 3,000 euro.. Add an extra 150 to upgrade to the 7800..

Ironically, I just got a brand new XPS2 two weeks ago with a 2.26GHz Pentium M. I also have 2GBs of RAM in it. I also have the 3 years NBD warranty. To buy that exact same spec machine now would cost me €3,308..

What's it like? Does the 2.26 Ghz make a big difference over the 2.13?

Have you tried ripping any DVDs with it? I'm concerned it might be slow at encoding them in comparison to say a Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz?

Nope not been doing much media work with it at all.. I know the Pentium M is not as well equiped as a P4 for that kind of work though..

This should give you a better idea:
