What makes a thread good

I've noticed a growing number of posts, since the new charter was posted, referring to the general crapness of some threads. With this in mind I'd tought it maight be in everyones interests to try to find the esential ingredients for a 'good thread'.

Taking into account the restrictions imposed by the charter, what three essential characteristics do you think a Thread should have in order to propell it to the dizzy heights of greatness. Maybe between us we'll get a few good ones going.

    My Top Three;

    1) Something which many people have personal experience of - this tends to stir a bit of emotion and produce more valid comments.

    2) Something which makes allowances for a bit of wit/sarcasm/irony etc. - how many of us love that little smile that emerges upon reading that one-liner?

    3) Something which requires a bit of research, not much necessarily, but enough to ensure that only people with an interest in the subject, or a witty remark, will be bothered to post.

Of course they're open to objection.

The more bizarre, but honest, the subject matter, the better (i.e. not some confabulated nonsense about blue zebras in time machines). Ones that divide opinion right down the middle are always good fun, as are most threads about stupid people.

High quantity factor - you need LCD - Lowest common denominator

High quality factor - you need LCD - Least common denominator

High entertainment factor - you need LSD - Lysergic acid diethylamide*

    * Joke

Good thread? Make something interesting that promotes adult discussion or that is very funny and original (and prompts funny responses). Make your posts clear and legible.
Follow the rules. Posts that veer off-topic usually do so due to the thread having limited discussion. This is fine and all but I feel that in any discussion, the original poster should be the guy who keeps his thread on track. I haven't heard any funny stories about people in a while.

anything with the Hoff or a poll with "atari jaguar" is top notch...

I really hate threads about people moaning about scumbags.

    Fukin get over it already.

Oh and threads in which the sole reason for creation is to generate a dick waving contest.

Yes, I'm a very negative person.

Agreed Ronoc - get it off your chest is the place for that, but to concentrate on the ingredients necessary as opposed to unnecessary, so far we have:

    1) Something which prompts humour,
    2) Something a little off the wall - but not too much,
    3) Something divisive - but not offensive
    4) Something with enough capacity to allow it stay on topic

I think a thread gets good when things are debated hot and heavy, I remember the hardest stint of debating i done was last spring before Rule42 was relaxed by the GAA, I posted at least 20 posts that evening and eventually as me and others were winning the debate, about how the "foreign game" should be kept out of croker. I think that Pigman also makes a thread good as well, he's the spice of life. I also am a good addition to any thread i believe, I sometimes have the wrong affect and everybody leaves though :D

Well Ann, I'm glad you asked.

There are many types of threads available on the market today. They vary in fiber content, fiber length, thread size, and intended use. A good quality thread will be easier to work with in a sewing machine, serger or by hand. The results of the project will also be improved if a quality thread is used instead of a "bargain" thread. A good quality thread is strong, smooth (not fuzzy), consistent in thickness and resists tangles. No one thread can be used successfully on every fabric. It is important to understand that the best thread depends on the project in which it will be used.

I personally prefer to wirk with silk while incorrectly spelling the word "work"; its a quality thread made from long continuous filament fibers resulting in strong and lustrous thread. Though a bit expensive, it is good for tailoring because it can stretch.

I think that this makes a thread good Good Man Maximilian, we must meet up and darn together, recount the stories of bygone days when real men stitched herringbone!

    So and to the list
    5) Something with potential for word-play

Iv noticed that the threads that give people the chance to talk about themselves get the most reaction.. for example:

So where is everyone going tonight?
    Whats everyones fav food?
What do you like in a girl/guy?....

    etc etc....

    Just an observation

Something funny and/or interesting. And preferable not one of those fast moving, I posted on the first page then came back and it was on page six and the interesting topic had become dull spam kind of threads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,658 ✭✭✭✭The Sweeper

And an observation you should be horsewhipped for. Down with the repetitive meanlingless bullhooey threads! They're done so far to death they're the subject of a new zombie movie.

God forgive me, but Pighead's "where do I see myself on 28 September 2006" is an interesting topic, but where it falls down is that you tend to just get lists and lists of response.

Threads need opinion, humour, attitude and novely to be truly entertaining. What your favourite food might be is about as novel as arsefluff.

Yeah Pighead sort your thread starting skills out you ninny
Its kind of hard to get good regular good threads in After Hours as everything has been done to death at this stage, and any subject that might start up a good lively debate usually has a specialised forum of its own.ie Politics etc.Anyway i'm off to read the "Starting Good threads for Dummies"book

I wasnt saying it was a good thing  but you do agree that these threads get a lot of response, you said yourself "they're done to the death"

add "someone attempting to start a fight" to the list.

Now, now, stop it children - we seem to be going down the "stuff that makes threads crap" route - it's kinda the opposite of what I was looking for - 3 essential ingredients for the thread.

You have to speak into your computer's microphone and simply say "NEW THREAD" in a commanding tone.

Alternatively, make enough posts to be able to start a thread. I think the number may be 10.

Since nobody else wants to help you, I will!

If you're on the main site, there's a button on the top left that says "New Thread".
If you're on the touch site, there's a button on the top right that says "Post".
