2 of the best races i've ever watched...

Galileo vs Fantastic Light in the Irish Champion Stakes.

The last 2 furlongs were a dual between 2 exceptional animals.
Neither of the 2 of them new how to loose really. They pulled 6 lengths clear of Bach who was back in 3rd, I thought that Galileo was amazing to race with Fantastic Light like that with him only being 3 at the time. A huge but strong looking horse he was.

Fantastic Light has that classic look about him, He lookes lovely, a similar shape to he's dam's sire Nijinsky.

2nd Race i loved and could keep watching over and over was the 2000 BC Classic.

    Tiznow vs Giants Causeway.

Just watch the last 3 furlongs of that race. Giants causeay would have won had Mick Kinane not got he's whip stuck in the reins and Giants causeway eased off...

In recent memory it's got to be last years Tingle Creek at Sandown, it's a long time since I remember such hype in the build up to a National Hunt race. All the talk of who was the best Moscow Flyer or Azertyuiop, they went into it being the two highest rated chasers in Ireland or the UK.

As a rarity nowadays the race lived up to the hype and more. Turning for home Moscow Flyer, Azertyuiop and young pretender Well Chief were side by side. I remember the buzz of excitement when they were coming to the second last, Moscow Flyer proved his class in the end going on to win by 1.5 lengths. It was a cracker of a race.

Agree with MasterK. I found it hard to get enthusiastic about anything for a month after that Tingle Creek. I had seen it all. Galileo v Fantastic Light was as good a flat race that you are likely to see anywhere. Neither horse could get the upper hand on the other. Once one looked like getting ahead by a nose, the other responded and looked to be getting back on top. Switched back and forth for the most of a furlong and a half. A group 1 as well. BEst flat race I can remember.

If any of ye get the chance to see Dayjur winning the Nunthorpe at York on video - I think its in Willie Carsons favourite races - watch it. I have never seen a horse run so fast. A little ball of muscle, it looked as if his feet couldnt carry him, and that any moment, the momentum he was generating would throw him arse over t1t. Phenomenal performance.

Also Secretariat win in the Belmont Stakes is something to behold. He went clear after a fulong and never stopped going away. I think he won the final leg of their triple crown by 29l. I think the video is on the net somewhere.

Arazi winning the Breeders Cup juvenile was the most breathtaking Ive ever seen. Like something from Seabiscuit or National Velvet. Knife through butter.

Actually on that the old footage of Seabiscuit War Admiral race looked phenomenal. I saw that in a documentary in Seabiscuit.

Desert Orchid/Panto Prince in the VC Chase 1988 is another classic.

Watch Secretarait win here. This is the final leg of the American Triple Crown in 1973. The second and third were Grade 1 winners.

Stunning. No wonder he is the most recognised name of any horse in the states - before Seabisuit came out I suppose.

That was the best I have ever seen - and I was there too! Had my money on Galileo (like 90% of the crowd there!) - but it was a great race.

in the photo attached you can even see a bookie applauding Frankie !!

i also have a $hitty little video (from digital camera) of the last hundred yards - you can hear the disappointment in the crowd as Fantastic Light gets his head in front.

Sorry Ziggy, I didnt see your reply until now. (I was digging up the video link for a friend) Glad you enjoyed it. If you find Arazi winning the Breeders Cup juvenile online, let me know, its the other race that blows my socks off every time. UNbelievable performances.

The unfortunate thing about Secretariat's Belmont video is that the commentator calls a 24 length victory when it was in fact 31. But the most amazing thing about that victory was the times; it was run at sprint pace (he would have broken records at various fractions of that race, including after the finish line when being pulled up) but he kept it up to the line, winning in 2:24, a time that no horse has even come close to (the next being Easy Goer at 2:26 - 11 lengths difference)

The stretch of Arazi's Juvenile victory is availabe (along with along other BC winners) at:

    http://www.ntra.com/bc_timecapsule.aspx

Although the video doesn't show the incredible move Arazi makes from last to first down the backstretch and final turn, I love the way the commentator is astonished at the move and really is almost lost for words. Without a doubt my favourite performance to watch...

[edit] By the way, Arazi's race is the 1991 Juvenile at Churchill Downs

It was the 14th of March 2004, the final race of the Cheltenham festival that year, the Weatherbys Champion Bumper. I had total enjoyment backed at 16/1 four weeks before the race, a 100 euro win on the horse. I recieved the tip from Jim Culloty who was riding it, and he was 100% positive that it would come home in fine style, and that it did. He had raced on her against Solerina, and he didn't even ask anything of her on that occasion and she finished neck and neck with Solerina. He sat in behind the leaders from about 4f out, then as he approached the 1f mark he let whip, and total pissed it. Refinement finished about 2 lenghts behind total in second place if I recall correctly. Every bookies in tralee was cleaned out for days and I still have the money in my betting stash. Sadly, the horse has since been put down :(

I have a soft spot for Soviet Song and enjoyed winning a few readys from her. But i must comment on how she put the pretended to the throne Attraction in its place in the Falmouth Stakes in Newmarket.
The turn of foot she showed that day to overhaul Attraction was just brilliant and showed her young pretender how hard it is to win a Group 1 race.
Johnny Murtagh is just a perfect partner for her.
