Cheap Wireless Solution

This is only a thought - but it could become reality if the price/effort involved is right.

I want to setup a wireless LAN between my house, and a friends house.
The bird-path distance is roughly 250/300 meters between both our rooftops. (god bless google maps :))
Assuming that line of sight is established between both rooftops, what would be the cheapest solution to setup a secure link between both locations?

Note that I'm quite interested in this ;) But actual legit options can be considered aswell :p

    Anyone have any thoughts?

AFAIK you'll need a wireless transmitter and a uni-directional receiver antennae. And the cabling of course. Check out Irish-wan for deals. Here's one thread with some of the parts you'll need.

Another generic question for people here.

Instead of splashing out on a wireless router, to which I would connect my linux server to for control of my LAN anway, is it possible to use an internal wireless NIC in the linux box to act as an access point for an infrastructured network (ie, not ad-hoc)?

    _excellent_

    Thank you very much.

Now, back to the original post - If I were to hook up a directional antennae, for example, a Yagi (or something similar), to the wireless NIC in the pc, well, would it work for starters :)
