can anyone help me< ive ran numourous spyware and anti virus but it can up blank.
the pc in question loads up perfect no problems but within a few seconds of moving the mouse, it takes on a life of its own and moves around clicking randomly opening files on the desktop and display properties and stuff. then it just freezes, quite frustrating, i dont even have time to back up files to clean install. can anyone help???
its my sisters pc, she suspects that it may have been a dodge file from limewire...but shes just a girl, what does she know :p

I heard someone had a dodgy keyboard here and suspected the same... but they just plugged it out and then back in and all was fine again!
Go with sullys advice for the moment also.

What type of a mouse is it also? If it has the little ball inside it, give it a clean, and try again.

Cant seeing it be anything dangerous tbh

A couple of theories / suggestions....

some mice have a little switch for 2-button or 3-button emulation/operation.
I can remember switching between those, and the mouse exhibited the same behaviour as you described. Is there a 2/3 button mouse switch on the mouse ?

If it's an optical mouse, I had trouble with the positioning because I used the mouse on a glossy surface ( on a hardback book ).
Although that wouldn't explain the clicking behaviour....

Failing that, I'd reboot without a mouse, remove the mouse from the device manager so that windows has to auto-detect it when you shutdown and restart.

    regards,
    Owen

I'd 2nd the cleaning of it. Take the ball out, clean it. Then clean where the ball sits into. Those 3 directional rollers need to be cleaned aswell.

could this be someone using a vnc program to get access to the pc using a known or unfixed bug especially when its an old OS. For example they could be using a flaw in an old msn app or remote assistance app. can you do a ctrl alt del and list out the processes running, especially any strange ones.

I say this because you said that the mouse randomly opens stuff etc. seems strange.

Try a different mouse aswell. Could eliminate the hacking theory which I don't think it is.

first of I can't see that being a mouse problem. If you have a spare computer (U say this is your sisters comp?) pull the hd/switch to a slave/install in your own computer and run your anti virus tools on it etc.
This will catch any nasties you can't catch on a 'Live Drive' and clean any infection on there. The problem is, once something gets in and you run it (Your sis in this case), it makes no difference what antio virus you run etc the infection will not be seen.

I have a drive acting the maggot at the moment which is exhibiting similar problems and it's getting to be annoying. Clean install when I get the main box tomorrow.

Anyway - try slaving the drive and running your scans then.

*Handy Tip* - Get a spare drive, a 4 gig or so will do, install an os and anti virus/security progs etc to it, then remove and store safely. Periodically, swap out your master drive/install the spare/switch your main master drive to slave and run your security progs on both drives (After updating the security progs of course). Any little nasties you have inadvertantly allowed in will be caught this way. They won't be seen otherwise.
After you've run this 'Uber Security' check, simply switch your main drive back to master and remove your spare drive. I do this once a month to be sure I'm safe but every 3 months is a good limit to set.

    :)
