As you might see, I am writing at 05.12 in the morning. I'm very tired, but can't sleep. I think at this stage I'm over tired. This has been going on for the last 4/5 weeks. Does anybody know a good natural way to sleep?
I don't want to take sleeping tablets yet, but if this goes on for another 3 weeks I'll have to.

There are natural herbs you can get, can't remember the name of them but if you go into any pharmacy they will know what they are. You can get them over the counter.

Am I suppose you could get hammered but that would kinda turn you into an alcoholic especially if you were doing it on regular basis. I am sure u get a few sleeping pills off your gp but that would also be pretty bad for you.

Tbh check out google I am sure there are plenty if websites on there that could help you out.

If it's not available to purchase in RoI, then there's a reason for it.

Try to exercise 3-4 times a week for at least 30 mins each session. Buy some valerian tablets at your pharmacy.

I suffered from insomnia for a while after a serious car crash. I eventually went to see someone about it because non-prescription herbal sleeping "cures" are crap. Turned out it was because I was napping for 20-30 minutes after eating. Avoid naps like the plague.

I have found that regular exercise a good while before you attempt to sleep does make you sleep more easily.

Warm milk is also a natural sedative.

hot chocolate/warm milk/horlix at night is a sleep aid, valarean root is also a sleep aid, you can buy supplements at yourlocal pharmacy.

But brain activity and heart rate are what influence your sleep. Nothing strenuos in the hours leading up to sleep. And try to give yourself an hour before lights out to do a quite and relaxing activity like readin a book in bed. Nothing stimulating.

Also Nicotene/Alcohol/Recreational Drug addiction influences your sleep, and you should not consume any of these substances an Hour or so before sleep as they are all stimulants (Yes, that includes canabis, depsite what you may think).

Incidently, if you use these substances late at night when you are not sleeping your body notes this and will crave them at those hours if/when your regular sleep pattern resumes, and may disrupt your sleep again.

    1) Get up at a regular time, even if you're tired
    2) Cut back on weekend lie-ins
    3) Exercise
    4) Proper diet
    5) Remove clutter from your room and keep it clean
    6) Have a warm, not hot, shower
    7) Warm Milk
    8) Have a drink ( just the one! )
    9) Keep a notepad and pen beside your bed to write down any thoughts that keeps you awake
    10) Decide what time you need to go to bed at and TURN OFF THE PC!

    and finally

    11) Have a Sandman.

Insomnia is no fun, hope it works out for you buddy.

I used to get pretty bad insomnia.

Pick a time to get up at, and stick to it.
Pick a time to go to bed at, and stick to it.
Do some exercise, or more exercise.
Don't use your bedroom for anything other than sleeping and t'other :) No reading, TV or using a PC. Get it mentally associated with sleeping.
Relax with a book in a chair before bed - no games or drama.

Some nites it takes me ages to get to sleep it was worse when i smoked hash my mind would be going at some rate,id recommend cutting out any caffiene or any fizzy drinks at least 2 hours prior to bedtime anyway for a start.

I used to get it really bad for months at a time, ruined my getting in in time for sixth year schedule... what I found works fantastically is listening to something. It takes your mind of things, gives you a simple focus but nothing mad and sets you at ease. I don't mean music and I don't mean the news.

What did it for me was old radio plays from the 30s to the 50s. I listen to the shadow nearly every night and a raft of others. I'd recommend The CBS radio mystery theatre too.

Bung a search into a p2p program and put in OTR. You'll churn up loads ;)

Have fun, it was a great quick fix for me and it still works :)

One thing that worked quite well for me a few years ago was to get some lavender scented candles / air freshner / lavender oil or even a sprig of actual lavender (if it's still available in this day and age :P) and place it near your bed...

Staying off the computer is another good point. Glare from a computer monitor will fool your system into thinking it's more awake than it is...

I used to suffer terrible insomnia.. Firstly I reckon the most common problem is too much caffeine. Restrict chocolate, coca-cola, coffee/tea to at most one a day of each and don't have any after 3pm. Also alcohol consumption wrecks your sleep.

If this is not the case for you, barring psychological reasons excercise and a healthy diet definitely helps, but mostly melatonin worked best for me:

    http://www.ceri.com/mel.htm
you can get it from qhi.co.uk afaik

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 37,485 ✭✭✭✭Khannie

Oh yeah, meant to mention the caffeine thing....You could be very sensitive to caffeine. I can't drink anything caffeinated after 7pm if I want a decent nights sleep. My wife can have a big steaming mug of coffee and happily sleep the night away (cow!).

hot chocolate has caffeine so I'd suggest avoiding it initially. Once you're back into routine, the sedative effect will kick in before the caffeine does. :)

Camomile tea or a few drops of lavendar essential oil on pillow are good. You could also try valerian (you can get it in tincture or tablet form from a healthfood shop or chemist - it's a herb) which will knock out anyone......it's really good, because it's got no side-effects, is non-addictive and is safe to take. Nighty night x ;)

Nothing that hasn't been said before

    1. Take at least 4 hours good exercise a week on at least 3 different days a week.
    2. Don't drink caffine after 6pm and easy on the sugar too
    3. Try and keep your room quiet and dark at night
    4. Have a **** before you go to bed :)

Thanks for the tips guys and gals
    So to sum up:
    1. Take exercise
    2. Keep room clean
    3. Take valerium
    4. Give up the caffeine after 6
    5. Try to relax more
    6. Partake in chronic masturbation :D

Nearly all good advice. I'm very stressed at the moment and this is certainly not helping. I've also developed alopecia in my beard from stress. But I'm sure it's a short term thing though. Thanks guys.

it's probably the stress that's giving you the insomnia, nip the problem in the bud

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,178 ✭✭✭Bamboozled

Also try some lettuce. Lettuce sandwiches or a salad for your tea. it is a natural seditive.

Try a warm bath rather than a shower if you have mentally associated showering with waking up.

Good luck. It's no fun suffering from insomnia.

Sometimes you have to make a decision like always going to bed around 12:00

Also if you find yourself constantly thinking.
Just count your outbreaths and think of nothing else.
That will stop your mind from agitating you and help you sleep.
I will put the full artice on my blogspot when i get a chance.

This is a long Read on 1 way to cure insomina hope it works.
I havent checked for myself if its works.

"How To Put Your Mind To Sleep Quickly..."

As you may already know, your mind must be in the
Alpha brain-wave stage to fall asleep. This is the
stage your mind enters you're still conscious, but
your body and begin to relax. It enables your more
rampant and conscious mind to turn off as you
    enter the realm of sleep.

We all know how it feels,... it's quite unusual
actually... When you're lying awake in bed trying
to fall asleep it seems like your mind is running
    on hyper-speed. It's almost like you're thinking
10 times faster than you when you're just normally
    awake and alert.

In fact, if you experience this often, I can tell
you for a fact that your mind IS working harder
than it is when you're not trying to fall asleep,
and there is a very good reason for it, here's why
    this happens...

In my books and articles on sleep, I often teach a
    principle:

    "What you focus on expands."

You see, your mind responds to focus, and it goes
hand in hand with the law of momentum. What is the
    law of momentum?

    Quite simply:

"Energy in motion, tends to STAY in motion"

"Energy stopped, tends to STAY stopped"

    In other words,

If you take action in your life, and begin to
create success, you will experience more and more
success every day Success breeds success..

On the other hand, if you sit your butt down on
the couch to watch T.V and say "Aww, just one
show, I'll only watch 1 show"

Very soon, you'll be sitting there for 4 hours,
    and you'll watch 5 or 6 shows.

The law of momentum is everywhere in life, in
physics, with your body, and most importantly,
    with your "thoughts."

You see, your thinking is very predictable, it all
works on the law of focus and momentum.

Your mind is like a big ball of potential thinking
energy, just waiting for you to give it a
    direction to think wildly into...

It awaits and responds your every command. It's an
    exceptional tool.

Except, most of us aren't very experienced at
"controlling" this amazing tool. In fact, a lot
people aren't even aware that they can control it!

And this is where sleep problems come in.

Imagine your mind like a giant overflowing lake
that's just waiting for an outlet to pour into...

Slowly, when it finds an outlet, it begins with a
    trickle of water..

That trickle turns into a stream...

Then, that stream turns into a small river.

Pretty soon, the small river is a giant
    unstoppable waterfall.

Your thoughts work in the same way when you're
    "trying" to fall asleep.

For example, you're laying in bed, frustrated,
forcing your mind to not think.

"I just want to get some sleep! Stop thinking...
Okay, starting now... I won't think anymore...

    Don't think...

    Don't think...

    Don't think

Hey... "Don't Think, rhymes with nothing... What
    is nothing?"

"My life is nothing... If only I would finally get
motivated in my job maybe I would finally create
the income to start traveling instead of dealing
    with these problems"

"Problems, how can I ... Ahh, I'm thinking again!
    Stop"

You get even more frustrated, and repeat the
process over again in a few minutes.

So how do you stop it?

It's easy, you see, you can easily control your
thinking, except most people aren't aware of the
    tools necessary!

The good news is, I'm about to give you the 3 step
    handbook to controlling your mind.

Here are the 3 universal steps that will enable
you to not only stop thinking, you'll also be able
to lower your brain-waves into the alpha
brain-state, which will quickly let you enter
    sleep.

    Step 1) Awareness

    Step 2) Relaxed Focus

    Step 3) Repetition

    Let me explain,

You see, firstly, the main problem that people
have when they "try" to fall asleep and "try" to
    turn off their mind is..

    They're "trying".

Sleep isn't something that can be achieved, or
    conquered. Achieving, takes
the use of your mind, which you don't want to
    work!

So, #1, stop trying! ... Now here's an explanation
    of the 3 steps.

    Step 1) Awareness.

The first step to changing anything is becoming
aware that it's happening, especially if it's your
    mind.

Pretend your mind is racing, and you finally
realize that you're thinking... Most people at
this stage get extremely frustrated and "try" to
    force the mind into submission.

It doesn't work! Why? Because, what you focus on
    expands.

The more frustrated you get, the more you're
focusing on frustration, so you'll get even MORE
frustration, and more thinking... on an on! Make
    sense?

So the first step, is to simply become "aware" of
the fact that you're thinking. Nothing more

When you notice that you're thinking, smile to
    yourself, and say

"I just noticed myself thinking... Interesting..."

Now notice what happens inside of you when you do
    this...something VERY profound...

If "I" just noticed "myself" thinking...

Perhaps... there are really two completely
    separate identities running your life?

    There is the "I"

    and there is the "self"

The "I", is the real you, the higher being, the
"I" behind the mind, that runs the show, the
heart, the soul, the true conscious being, the
    choice maker.

The "self" - the mind. If left to run the show,
will run in endless circles t'll the edge of
    insanity.

The moment you do this, the moment you become
"Aware" - you are no longer a slave to your mind.
    You have won.

After you become aware... Do nothing, just lay
there for 3 seconds... and notice how it feels to
be present in who you really are, not the mind,
but you, the "I" - there is a great feeling of
peace behind that presence in the "I"

Why? Because when you are aware like this, you're
aware of the power of your choice making. You now
    have the power of choice.

    Step 2) Relaxed Focus

    "What you focus on expands"

Now that you have become aware of your thinking.
All you have to do is "direct" into a place that
will bring you into a deep, deep place of
    relaxation.

Think about it, if before your mind will
relentlessly race into any direction you give it,
why not pick a direction that will give you peace
    and restful sleep?

Obviously :) But, most people don't know what that
    direction really is.

And just what is that direction? It's really easy.
If you focus on anything your body does or feels
subconsciously, you will begin to become more and
    more realized.

    For example

    - Your breathing
    - The feeling of the pillow on your head
    - The sounds of nature outside(unless you live in
    the city)
    - The warm of your body

These are all things that happen, yet your
conscious mind doesn't think about them.

    Why does it work?

As you know "what you focus on, expands"... So
what would happen if you focused on something that
    is happening in your "subconscious"?

That's right, your conscious thinking would
diminish, and your subconscious mind would begin
to take over the entire process of you falling
    asleep!

Is it really that simple? Yes, in fact it's the
simplest thing ever, and it works every-time.

The easiest one, is your breathing. And I promise
you if you just try this tonight, you will be
shocked when you wake up in the morning "Wow! It
    worked!"

Which brings us to Step 3:

    Step 3) Repetition

As I said, the easiest one to focus on is your
    breathing.

In the beginning, you'll find this easier said
than done. Let me walk you through it.

Begin by taking your focus onto your breathing.
Take a deep breath in. Hold it for a short while,
    and slowly exhale...

    Count "1"

Breathe in again... hold it shortly, exhale
    slowly, and count...

    "2"

    Why Count?

Because I guarantee you, in the very beginning,
you may find it challenging to hold your focus.

In fact, you'll be surprised as you may not even
make it to "5" the first time.

Why? Because your conscious ever-thinking mind
will butt in and interrupt. You may randomly go
off into a barrage of thoughts again.

If this happens, and it very well may, what do you
    do?

Simply become aware, and begin focusing on your
    breathing again.

    Guess what happens?

As you become aware, 2 or 3 times... Your mind
    will give up...

I guarantee you, beyond the shout of a doubt, when
you get to "10" or "15" breaths... You will feel a
wave of relaxation in your body.

This is the silent "click" as your mind shifts
from the high frequency Beta Brain-Waves into
    Alpha brain-waves.

Your subconscious mind will do the rest!

That's all for now, if you'd like to get
the entire guide to getting incredible
sleep, waking up earlier with even more energy
than before, by energizing your "inner sleep"
system with simple, yet extremely powerful
