With the abduction of Walt fresh on their minds and their raft destroyed, Michael, Sawyer and Jin fight for their lives in the middle of nowhere in the ocean and discover a new predator in the roiling sea. Meanwhile on land, Locke must descend into the hatch when one castaway goes missing inside. Jolene Blalock ("Enterprise") guest stars.

Im liking the part with 'new predator'. What could it be?

I fancy SAwyer grabbed the anchor rope clims aboard and kills the pirates/kidnappers. Since the boat has no sails they now have a local transport which can lead them to sevreal other places on the island. the know they have fule to reach it since the pirates came from it and they know the rough direction or they migh just find charts or something else to "home in" on. So they have a "fast" local craft which cant go deep sea.
I assume the pirates and the black smoke people are the same since they want the young people.

I assume that since the "smokers" are after the group on land (or they THINK they are) that they plan to descend the shaft anyway. I would not expect it to be deep - ten metres at most. It did have a ladder inside so it was meant as a possible exit. But the fact is is is not the MAIN entrance since it didnt have a handle on the outside. Unless it was intended to close only once. But then some safety device or catch would be on the outside. there wasnt one.

It is to sophisticated to be a smugglers cache. I think maybe a fallout shelter? Or maybe the island is an experiment where your mind can effect the surroundings and the shelter is shielded from the effects. If so there should be supplies.

I like the idea of the plane being full of drugs. Maybe they will capture a smoker and the doctor will be faces with making him into a junkie in order to extract information from him.
