Replacing Back Box

My exhaust back box is on the way out, and I need to replace it. I've been looking on Ebay:

and a lot of the back box systems seem to be of the extremely loud variety. Now, I'm after something that looks stylish, but I also want something that gives a nice engine note without that loud booming boy-racer blast.

Also, I notice that there are "universal" back boxes, as well as ones for specific cars. So, any catch with these univeral ones?

    I have a 98 Honda Civic hatch.

    Any advice appreciated.

What litre engine is the car?are you intrested in performance gains at all?

The difference between a specific or "bolt on" as there know and universal is that the "bolt on" simply does that to the existing pipework whereas a universal will not be an exact fit and has to be welded on ( no big deal ).

You could try the likes of powerflow exhaust who will tailor make an exhaust to how you want and sound altho there pricey.

The thing about a universal exhaust is that most of them are loud,if your intent on buying one look for one with a silencer which is like a removable plate that reduces the noise level as you wish

    1.4i Civic.

Sounds cool.. yeah, I definitely want one with a silencer.

I don't know much about back boxes, but it seems that I'll have to pay somewhere in the region of €100?

Does anyone know if it's possible to get performance gains from a back box? Remember, I'm not replacing the enture exhaust, just the box.

Kinda OT, but hopefully it'll help Dagon out too ;) . Is it possible to add a silencer if there isn't already there, or even is there a possibility of adding and adjustable one that could be used or not used as mood dictatates ?

In short no you wont see any performance gains on a 1.4 civic from a backbox alone. You'd need some other engine breathing mod's and even then youd be lucky to probably see 1bhp extra on the 1.4!

Your talking in or around E100 for a stainless steel backbox, most of the time there fairly deep and gurgly on civics tho.

Here's a picture of a universal with silencer inplace

Its basically the plate with the hole in the middle,so if you want just a deeper exhaust tone you leave it in,if you want the exhaust louder you simply take the bolt out from the side.

@Stevenmu - what type of exhaust is it you want a silencer for?if its an aftermarkt system im if you couldnt find one that it could be easily made up

It's an aftermarket backbox, janspeed I think, it was on the car when I bought it, so I'm not sure of the exact model. I'm going to try and get under the car and maybe take it off for a better look at the weekend, depending on how easy/difficult it's going to be to remove. I'm hoping it's a simple bolt on.

Even with silencer in place, it's still loud you mean? Cause I'm thinking of ordering one of these things on ebay with a silencer, but if it's still loud then maybe not!

    thanks for the help guys

No its not really loud as in booming or headache noise, more of a deeper exhaust tone louder than standard but not as loud as a box without the silencer if that makes sense - just nice sounding!

What part of the country are u in?youl probably find that your better off buying an exhaust here, after shipping charges ect the work out more or less the same if not cheaper
