I am travelling to Australia for a year next month. What is best way of taking money? Can I give Australian bank my Irish account details so money can be transferred over?

The quickest/cheapest way is to either bring travellers cheques and lodge them into your Oz account when you get there, or else just bring your Irish ATM card, withdraw the money over there and then lodge it again.

I just left most of my cash in my Irish account and once i got to Oz i opened an aussie account and transfered my balance.

    Easiest and safest way.

Open an account there and then wire your cash in. I take it that you'll be working there so you will need a bank account (for your wages) and an ATM card. I found that applying for an Aussie credit card is also useful. Set it up so its a direct debit. This means you can run all your finances locally and keep an eye on them. Be warned Australian banks are very inefficient and they charge you for everything!
