Laying a lawn

Is it too late in the year to plant a lawn? Is there much growth left. How long does it take for the grass to appear. The garden has just been covered with topsoil and I don't want a mucky garden for the winter.

are you seeding or laying turf?
Seeding should be fine into early october, I dont know about laying turf, might be too wet and the sods might just slide around the place.

September/October is fine - I would strongly advise buying a book "The Lawn expert" for advice - for under €10 can't go wrong - in most bookstores

I sowed a new lawn in the back garden 3 weeks ago, its doing great. I’m just about ready to cut it for the second time. Apparently September is the perfect time to lay a lawn.
