winamp & mp3 problem

i was using creatives media source thingy to rip cds to mp3 but some one recommended win amp when i go into it tonight its ripping to the mp4 aac format. some one told me this is apple format and crap. thing is when i opt for mp3 it says i need to buy win amp pro am i mis-understanding something here?

Winamp 5 has mp3 encoding, but only when its registered.

Frankly, you'd be better off grabbing something like CDex anyway. Or stick to what you had that worked.
