What are the most idiotic/most repeated/pet hate questions you've been asked by people having a look at you car.

I often get "Well... how many gallons per mile" or the my personal favourite:

"Ahh, left hand drive, it must be easier to see around bends then"

Not a classic, but hopefully a future one ;)

    My dad's '93 MR2:

Do the rear wheels steer it?
Can people sit where the t-bar roof sits when taken off?
Is it a Ferrari? Yes, that Toyota badge is for decoration

Generally people are more curious, but you always get the experts:

"That's the one with water suspension" - eh, no. It's gas and oil.
"I heard it can drive on two wheels" - no, but it can drive on 3.
"This is the one with the rotary engine" - I wish! :)
"Does it float?" - Yes, yes it does. For about 3 seconds.
"Is the the yoke that bounces in the rap videos?" - sure! why not?
"People always get sea-sick in them because they ride on water" - OK, but I hadn't noticed myself.

"Can it jump up and down?"

....which left me very confused until i figured out what the guy meant.

    Here's one for the list.
Apart from the one about needing an ESSO truck to drive along side you joke,
    {I classed 20 mpg good for a 6.0ltr v8}
Its now become "how much is a tyre for one of those yokes"which bugged me more as my day car is a 4x4 and got that question a lot with that to.
Even though a Mustang Tyre looks the same as an ordinary car tyre.

69 mustang, you weren't driving near Terenure at the weekend were you? It's just I saw a gorgeous dark blue(ish) one on US plates (left-hand drive) being driven around that area, and theyr'e not very common cars.

    Good post!

Sometimes you have to let people down gently...
    Asked about my Fiat Spider:

    PUNTER: It's a V10 isn't it?

ME: Uh, actually the 72's were straight fours.

[as were all 200,000 spiders ever built]

    :D

The "does it float one" floored me. Probably caused by the photo below.
But the others are understandable enough - "hydropneumatic" implies water, and Citroën were involved with rotaries in the 70s with the M35, GS and even CX.

Driving a 72 Mustang only a little while I've still managed to get quite a few.
Can I drive it? A stranger who was drunk asked me that one.ehhhh....no.
What is it? That one just annoyed me. I know the 72' isn't the mostly widely known model but it says MUSTANG on the back and it has a horsey on the front.
Kids seem to a have a fasination with speed, I've been asked how fast it goes loads of time. If I say 100 mph they seem dissapointed,if I say 200 they don't believe me, when I say I dont know they just keep on asking.
Is it American? I'm still thinking of an answer for that one.

A guy pulled up beside me at the lights 3years ago and let the window down "Jeeeeez is that really nineteen eighty four?"

I tried to correct him and say actually its nineteen SIXTY four but he cut me off and said "Those Mercs never really change much do they, the new one is exactly the same ! "

My pet hate are the usual "How much is she worth ?"

I just hate when folk turn everything back into money ! I mean I dont care if its a €500 XYZ whatever, if the woner loves it and has taken care of it then I can appreciate it !

Best one ever, I was using my Pagoda with the hard top on and a guy says.............."Jeeez I didnt think there were any Gullwings over here. Go on show us how the doors work"

    I replied "I wish I could buddy..................I just wish I could !"

my favourite was the guy who stood at the side of my old Corsair and looked under the bonnet and asked " Is it a two cylinder?"

yes it was a V4...... he couldnt work out why about 20 Ford fans were rolling on the grass crying their eyes out...... :D

Not much joking about the Jag I am afraid. Only in France, they all seem to think its a V8 that can only function with its own gas tanker in tow...

In France again, when looking at the MG badge on the B:

them: "what make is that then?"
me: "(sigh, you are looking at the damn badge).... MG... ?!"
    them: "ah...MG what?"
    me" "MG... MGB"
    them: "ah..."

or those who seem to know:

them: "it should bottle green with spoke wheels"
    me: "yawn"

With the Citroen Traction: everybody's father and/or uncle and/or grandfather has had one (this is actually lovely, gives an idea of how much this car is part of French history). But the discussion invariably gets into... "and they only came in black", since mine is white, there ensues an endless battle of certitudes that leads nowhere :) Every outing generates at least one conversation with a passerby or another motorist. The worst I have had when I used it everyday as a student was some older guy and his ageing wife actually stalling their own car in the middle of a crossroad (and all traffic) and walking over to me with gapping mouths as if they had seen their long lost family member... scary. You cant run AND you cant hide!

    How could YOU afford that?

Seriously someone (that I didn't actually know) said that to me

    :D

    I got
"Are these early Porsches just volkswagens with a different body"
Which wouldn't be so bad but I was driving a Triumph GT6 (?)

Had that a few times already for both cars [1.8i MX-5 non-Jap import (not a classic - yet ;) ) and 2.0 Sport Impreza].

About 5 or 6 times, in less than a year  - the f*cking cheek of it!!!

I'm 33, FFS - what is it in this country with envy and one-upmanship?!?

I think they got Mrs Bouquet wrong in the BBC sitcom, she should have had a Dublin accent :D

    That is quite cheeky alright.

Think the most annoying for me is "What would ya get outta her?" Don't really know what to say. Like if somebodys car can go 10mph faster than yours then it's automatically better like?
