Luas at James' Hospital

I know this is relatively unimportant but does anyone have any idea why the Luas announcer declares "a light for St. James' Hospital" (or something very similar sounding) after announcing it's the next stop. It kinda bugs me is all.

I know this question is old, but I will answer anyway. "alight" is a verb in the English language. "to alight" means to disembark (get off) a vehicle. Therefore, when the announcer says "Alight for St. James Hospital", it means "get off at this stop if you want to go to the hospital".

In London, a certain model of tram had a notice "Passengers Alight at Both Ends".

The phrase is used a lot on the LUAS OP, it's not just at St James Hospital. For example, if you are on a LUAS that terminates at Connolly Station, you will be told to alight at Busaras for connecting trams to The Point.

It is a rather old fashioned phrase to use though isn't it? I can see why the OP and others would not be overly familiar with its usage. Why not say Disembark Here or Get Off Here for XYZ? It may not be as grammatically correct as alight here but it is a lot more user friendly imo, especially if you are a non English speaking tourist.

St James's has been a non smoking campus since the start of the year, so presumably LUAS has stopped trying to bum a light of its passengers around there?
